Recently got a 271 from a dealer. First use the chain lost tension a few times. Strange. 2nd use chain lost tension more often and if tightened snug engine wouldn't turn. Really strange. 3rd time had to stop every 5 minutes to tighten the chain. Took it in, and discovered the PLASTIC bearing which sits behind the clutch melted off and burned the clutch. Dealer blamed me for running it with the break on. I never do that. $75 to replace the clutch and bearing on a new saw because some genius automotive engineer decided to use a plastic bearing Has anyone had the same issue with their new sthil chainsaws?

I have said it before and will probably say it again. Don't buy the cheaper out models of any manufacturer. They have not done themselves any favors with bringing that crap on the market. Buy a pro model and if you don't have the money, buy a used one. But leave the crap n the dealers shelves. Maybe, just maybe, they will then stop producing those throw away saws all together and go back to the old ways, building the stuff that gave them their good names.
Let's go Brandon

I would have left it at the dealer and walked out. The saw should not operate at all if the bar lock is on so what he claimed should not be possible if the saw is right. Talking that bs to me I would hav asked for a full refund and if I did not get it I would not have wanted t a junk saw and walked off leaving it there. I have always had good luck with my sttih saws but I gave not bought a new one in over 10 years. I also don't have but one home owner farm saw and it's an 029 farm boss I bought when I was 18. I'm getting ready to turn 43. I don't use it much preferring my ms 361 that's lighter has more power with longer bar and the anti vibration handle.
I think the 271 is a home owner lite use model. Bought my 029 Farm Boss in 1994.Replaced the sprocket once and other than bars and chains,,thats all I have done to it.Runs like a champ.

Yes I have never had a problem out of mine. I had 2 at one time buying one off the general Forman of the tree company I used to work for $75 when he needed money. I used it a few months then another guy I worked with asked to buy it from me for $125 so I sold it to him. I didn't need it and it was older and harder to start than the one I bought new.

Stihl may have hired automotive engineers and put them in management positions ... Who knows?
But your problem is with your dealer/repair service provider.
A small percentage of bearings are faulty from the manufacture and another small percentage fail in early live. The dealer should have taken care of the failure under a warranty claim, but chose to blame operator error and hand you a pile of stick. Result: the dealer put more of your money in their pocket and no claim to track if it is an ongoing production/design issue.

I think the 271 is a home owner lite use model. I believe all the old "farm boss" saws were the same internals as the pro models more less with the main difference being how difficult they were to rebuild and replace parts on

Also, anyone that has worked in a shop knows there isn't continuity between engineers and the folks on the floor who get it done. Adam, I think the dealer screwed you over and I would contact Corporate. Then I would trade your saw for a monkey, then shoot the monkey.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....
