How much does a dozen eggs weigh? Bought chicken thighs the other day. 1.29 lb.

At almost $20 bucks a bag of feed they aren't free Yep I quit raising layers a few years ago when a mink cleaned out my last batch. I loved having my own fresh eggs but hated how expensive they were plus the fact that at my house we use eggs sporadically. We go a while hardly using any then for a month or two we use tons of them. Then back to hardly any. This often left me with LOTS of eggs to get rid of which could be done but nobody was willing to pay what it costs to produce them witch left me in the situation of subsidizing other peoples grocery bills. Commercial chicken farms can only produce them so cheaply because of the huge scale that they are producing them on. Only profiting a fraction of a penny per egg but producing millions of them. Even at the current prices eggs are a fantastic value.

We get 4 bucks a dozen and they go as fast as the hens lay them. As Scott said, "the feed is not cheap".

If you consider the nutritional value of an egg it's still a great deal. The most nutritious food on the planet. A 18 pack carton of eggs', probably has more absorbable vitamin's and mineral's than all the rest of the food in your refrigerator.
I pay $70 or a 50 lb bag of feed, but I free range them spring to winter, and supplement, rice, scraps and other things. I still think its a good deal, after a couple hundred eggs a year in the end you get a chicken dinner. Wow, I thought having to pay over $10.00 per 50 pounds was bad. We go through 3 bags of 16% layer and 6 5 gallon buckets of corn a day. Keith
