Well, with the cold and icy weather we had yesterday I figured it was a good time to start a few seeds. First round done, I'll plant some more in 2 weeks and then move things out to the greenhouse. I was able to get 9 dozen peppers, 4 dozen cabbage, and 2 dozen broccoli started yesterday. I'm really fighting the urge to not plant tomatoes too early. Last year, my tomatoes were nearly 4' tall with golf ball sized tomatoes when we go them planted.

So, for this 21* and icy morning, here is a pic of the greenhouse from last year to get you in the gardening mood.

It was -21 this morning and -28 forecast for Friday morning so gardening isn't even on my radar yet.

I have nothing clever to put here.

That’s a nice greenhouse. Do you buy your seeds to start or get them from last years crop?

It is to early for me to plant tomatoes for my area now, I try to start tomatoes the 1st of March here, that puts them just about right to go to the field around the 10th of April. Pepper can be started in about 2 weeks here for the same time frame to go to the field.

A buddy of mine a couple miles from me planted 50 tomato plants outside 1 June last year. They froze on 3 June, mine were still in the house. I planted outside 15 June. No big rush for me. It sounds like 160 is getting the weather I had earlier in the week. It was only 9 below this morning and says 18 below for tonight.

Most of my plants come from my seeds we saved. I do buy some heirlooms occasionally to introduce new genetics into my stock.

Gregh, The farmers almanac states bell peppers can be started today. We are Zone 6B. I normally start my tomatoes around Valentines day. I prefer a tall healthy plant to put in the ground around Easter or shortly after. Having a greenhouse has allowed me to start seeds earlier and baby them longer if the weather doesn't cooperate.

Pintail_ drake04: You can start peppers now but the problem I always have with them is being able to hold them toward the end of march when my greenhouse would be over a 100 by 9 am. I could open the ends and sides of the greenhouse but it still gets too hot to hold them in my area. I always liked to go to the field with tomatoes plants that are not over 6 weeks old and watermelon plants not one 4 weeks old. And squash and cucumber plants not over 2 weeks old. I always had better luck with that age plants producing a marketable crop than I did older plants. But now I am south Arkansas and my climate and start dates are different than yours

Can’t plant warm season veggies here until Mother’s Day. Cold nights seem to stunt my tomatoes. Not sure they produce fruit any sooner.

Too soon to start warm season crops here. Early March is about right. We usually get our last frost may 18th, give or take. Wish I had a greenhouse like that

My wife often says she wants to have a garden but when it comes down to it, she just wants the finished product but doesn't like to put in the work. One year she says she wants to have some tomato plants and she promises she will take care of them all summer.

I got them going good and then planted them in the garden the middle of May, 7 plants, they were doing really good. I was going on a bear hunt for a week, so I told her if the forecast calls for a frost, just put a 5-gallon pail over the plants at night.

I came home a week later to find buckets on all the plants and the plants all dead. She put the buckets on them the first night because of a frost forecast, and left them on the plants for the whole week.

She can kill houseplants lickety split too.

Wow, we can be picking our first ripe tomatoes by June 1 down here if we start them early indoors and set them out in April.

I put a 40% shade cloth over the greenhouse, which works well in Zone 6B. It gets warm mid April and hot in May, but I can open the vents and the door on the greenhouse. If I have to, I'll even put a fan in to help regulate the temperature. The last 2 years, we got a killing frost in April, out of the norm for the last decade. That is why I decided to build the greenhouse. It allows me to start my plants sooner, and I can produce tomatoes before most in my area even have their gardens planted.

I prune my lower leaves heavily. I try to eliminate the areas where blight could set in. Plenty of air flow through the plants helps us a lot. I try to have 2' of clear tomato stem by June 1. We also use baking soda and asprin foliar spray to help combat blight.

We chop & freeze 15-20 gallons of peppers annually, and use them throughout the year. We also use several 5 gallon buckets of peppers when canning our tomato sauces. I do sell excess produce from my farm too.

Just placed my order with Greenhouse Megastore. I'll place my final seed order next week. I'll start my peppers next week too.
