Then why not just buy more of the U.S. government debt and hold the U.S. economy even more so by the short hairs as a bargaining chip...? They don't have to sacrifice millions of their people to do that.

Not saying this is the case or related but, through out history countries have used war for population reduction along with settling unrest and bring the population back under control. No to long ago just before covid infact China was having a lot of unrest.

China also has a serious demographic bulge of not having a lot of young adults coming up because of their former "one child per couple" rule. Their role as the "factory to the world" will be sliding down hill in the future because of the lack of same size amount of production workers as they did in say the past decade or so. Then again, they can use their acquired capital to build factories in younger countries that have plenty of up and coming workers, if the place is stable enough to have such capital invested. I don't expect to see the Chinese to be investing in places such as Haiti and other such "emotional" basket cases.
