I couldn’t sleep last night so I watched the whole thing and ran some numbers and this is what I came up with . A lot of the green coon was poor and a-lot of the dry was put up on the wrong board or last year with bug damage.

Green coon 322 average $2.86
Finished coon 113 average $2.68
Rats finished 26 average $2.83
Green beaver 25 average $ 21.28
Green otter. 2 average $ 25.00

That also includes the no value pelts so that doesn’t help any either.

He obviously has a market for garbage coon. Because most of the coon were just that. IMO averages mean nothing as fur is bought piece by piece and is not bought on average.

How does Groeny want green frozen beaver folded? Tail to head or side to side?

He said even folded into quarters was good.

I was surprised at the quality of coon for being Iowa. Or should I say lack of quality....and pee poor handling on alot of it to boot.

Catch them too early and they are junk no matter where they are from.

Never have a buyer so negative and always downgrade the product as much as Groeny does. Also can't tell you an idea of pricing. That is why they will never have the opportunity to bid on my fur.

Gary told me head to tail...length ways......in other words the fold is down the backbone area.

Late November is prime, late December is too late. In reality not much of an opportunity for trappers to harvest coons when the current market will even cover handling costs. We don't have coons as good as IA here but I am sure glad I was able to get more than those sold for.

Do your coons get yellow fur from eating all the cheeze?

As far as when its too late depends a lot on the weather. If the weather is mild and coons don't hole up for any length of time they will often still be pretty good into January. If they den up for awhile fur quality definatley suffers.

Yes I agree on weather but then that even narrows the window in more cases than not for us here. We have a ton of abondoned buildings here and coon will den near food sources which in many cases are barns, sheds and abondoned houses on farmsteads. Yes we have more yellow in our coons here Boco, we are trying to get the coons to eat less Cheddar and more provalone and other white cheese! lol.
I know we are not in a good market time frame but back when coons were say 8-10 in the grease on average or $14-$17 shipped out. I typically did better with early November coons then any other time frame on average and with enough pelts to get a sample size.

If your window in is from Thanksgiving to New Years in Minnesota on coon there are going to be years you have no harvest. Sounds so simple when you’re the buyer.
