Tuesday morning.I went6 out to get my mail--I never made it.It was raining out and I had about 2 inches of water, on top of a large area of ice.My first tep on the ice was my last.I flew up into the air and landed on my right hip.I figured I had broken my hip, because I couldn't stand up.I was laying on my back in the water and tried pulling myself back up to the house. When I reached my car ,a half hour later I was able to pull myself into a standing position.I though then I might be able to walk back to the house.Thats when I knew my hip was broken,I couldn't walk. Now I really was screwed up,leaning on my car soaking wet and wonjdering how I was going to get back .I let go of the car and ended up,belly first, back in the water. It took me another half hour to pull myself up to the front steps.I got the door open and rolled onto my back and pulled myself half way into the house.I was stuck and couldn't move. For 20 minutes I yelled for my wife, who was in bed sleeping. Finally she heard me and came to see what was going on. She dialed 911 so I fgured it would be about 5 minutes, because we are less than a half mile from the fire station and its rescue crew--wrong again. They were on another call,so I had to wait for our hospitals ambulance to get there. That was another 25 minute wait.By the time they got there I was shaking so bad ,I figured hypothermia was getting a good hold on me.6 rescue workers finally got me in an ambulance headed for the hospital. I hadn't spent a night in the hospital since 1958.After a lot of x-rays and tests, they set up surgery for 1:00 pm wednesday.Everyone kept trying to give me pain meds and I was able to do without them for 5 hours.I guess after the surgery I was looking for pain relief,I still refused to take Oxy,so they gave muscle relaxants and other pain meds. 2 rods were paced in my hip and several screws. I insisted on getting started on rehab,so with the aid of a walker ,I went for about a 30 foot walk last night. Today I told them I was intent on going home,so they showed me how to make it up and down the stairs using the side railings and a cane.My daughter picked me up early this afternoon,And I am home. I sure am slow getting aound with that walker--and yes--hospital food is not good, but the care givers are.
As I was typing this,my wife started laughing and the told me about the 911 call she made.--She told them--Half my body was otside in the rain--and half was inside the house,so you can imagine what they first thought.
All the times I have encountered the same weather conditions while trapping--and no broken bones,Then I encounter these wet icy conditions in my own yard and break bones--this getting old is something else. Be careful out there!!!! Tom
If my feet aren't wet,I must not be trapping. Tom Olson MTA life member#100,also WTA life member

Dang Tom. Glad to hear you're home already and on the mend. Sounds pretty scary.
Proudly banned from the NTA.
Bother me tomorrow. Today I'll buy no sorrows.

Glad you are on the mend. The ice we have on the sidewalks and some roads is terrible right now. I was close to going down yesterday. Hope you are able to fully recover soon!

Sorry to hear about this, but I am glad you are on the mend. You are right water on top of ice is almost impossible to walk on.

It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.
