personally I'd stay away from non native plants, your opening a can of worms when you do.
You might be planting the next garlic mustard or buckthorn.

Not saying you are wrong, but soybeans, milo, millet, corn, even apple trees are not native to the US. But in your defense, lab lab appears very similar to kudzu - and we know how bad it can be. Lab lab has been planted in food plots for decades, and to my knowledge - it has not become problematic - yet

Good idea. I've been looking for a good perennial(s). What is recommended?

wow, thats a wide open question.
Lots to consider.
Your goals, what is growing there now and is suppressed thus may come back with some thinning or other management, like fire, are you going to burn?
another thing is deer herd, more than likely you'll have lots of problems with getting certain stuff to survive deer browse.
Whats growing at your place now? there are companion plants for these that maybe missing that you could get back and increase the variety of stuff.

I have had various people from several different state and federal agencies. DNR forester, USFG, NRCS, Pheasants forever and few more I'm sure I've forgotten come to my place and give advise and or comment on what they saw.
I was disappointed with all of them and found their knowledge lacking. While I'd say they were good intentioned they lacked specific knowledge about the whole picture.
Its hard to find knowledgeable help.

I asked if they knew anyone who could identify pretty much any plant I pointed out and some additional info about it. Nope, in fact one of them told me that if I find someone who can to let them know. I knew more of the stuff than most of them did and I'm not very smart about it at all.

Apple trees are native to the US, Various crab apples for example. The vast majority of apple trees are descendants of wild apples (such as crab apple) that have been selectively bred for generations. Minor point I guess.
