It will be interesting to see the averages of the various sections. I can't remember the particular section; maybe Yakutia?? that usually sell at prices similar to Alaska sables.

Are they selling in US dollars? Yes, as always. Their Ruglish is more or less intelligible most of the time, so you can hear that almost all lots were sold, and a lot of the prices they are voicing are very good. This year is a major improvement compared to last year, which was disastrous. It is also interesting that unlike many trappers, many of whom didn't even bother to trap sable this year because of how disheartening, financially, last year was, local buyers across Siberia somehow knew and anticipated the increase well before the December auctions (both Sojuzpushnina and Ruspushnina) and the price they've been offering to trappers more than doubled in many cases, i.e. it's been well ahead of the inflation. Everyone in the trapping community is wondering where the fur is going, because the sanctions and embargoes cut off some of the major buyers, including Italy and Greece. Overall people here seem to agree that it's good news, meaning there is still a good market for fur... somewhere in the world

So what are we looking at here? 4 lots of 4 each, 2 unsold, 1 sold for 135.00 (per skin presumably?) and the lot of 4 silver sable bid at $184???

So what are we looking at here? 4 lots of 4 each, 2 unsold, 1 sold for 135.00 (per skin presumably?) and the lot of 4 silver sable bid at $184??? I'm not sure what 2.2 means in this particular grading system, perhaps tone/clarity, but 184 is the lot number, 4 is the color, on the Soviet state standard 2 to 7 scale, with 2 being the darkest, and 7 the lightest (now sometimes extended to 8 and 9, because of the increased demand for lighter sable, with the color 9 including albinos/canaries), and sil. is silvering/sedina, which is the same as sprinkling in the American grading system, which is graded from 0 to 5 (0 means no white guard hairs, 5 means half of all guard hair is white). A color 4, sil. 2 sable is among the most beautiful sable colors, actually, because it is instantly recognizable as natural undyed sable yet dark enough for the sedina to be instantly visible. Higher grades of sedina still command higher prices but subjectively such skins have a grayish, grizzly appearance, and are often not as pretty as grade 2 sedina, which looks like starry night I knew the silvers were among the best, so this is a high-grade lot. Thanks!

Siberian sables are still a pine marten, more or less, correct? Do they tend to be a bit larger than North American marten??

^^^I love it when the biologists speak on here. How refreshing!
Thanks Tatiana for taking the time. I am thinking that there must be some correlation with a rebounding sable market and our apparent come back on high end western cats. Somebody has some money they want to spend.

Thanks Tatiana in your explanation. My state doesn't have any martens because we don't have any real forests, except out in the western end in a low mountain area called the Black Hills. There may be some sort of population of pine marten out there, they are a protected species in the state, but few and far between. The closest martens to me is actually in northern Minnesota. I thing they're fairly thin up there as well, being on the southern or western end of the northern or boreal types of forests.
We have plenty of mink here, along with a couple of species of "actual" weasels but those are less seen as the mink. That's the closest we'll ever get to sables...
