Male mink will only breed females in February and March. Light hours in the day brings them into season. Coons will breed a female whenever they come in heat, which a female coon will do if they lose a litter, thus sometimes you see new born coon pups in August.
In the 1970's, when we raised 25,000 mink a year, we tried to rebreed female mink that had lost a litter (born in late April). It was a no-go. The female was willing but the male was not interested, in fact he would most times just pick a fight. After 2 years of trying this, the 3rd year I kept 2 males in a dark room all winter and did not put them in a mink shed until early April. We were successful in breeding 7 females within 48 hours after they had lost a litter and all 7 had kits in mid June. We did not continue the project as those late born mink did not reach full size when their fur was prime, again the same as coons born in August.
All that being said a 4 pound wild male is a big mink for a wild one in the lower 48. There are some areas in Alaska and Canada where they get bigger than that.

Any mink over 4 pounds is a whopper. Biggest I've ever caught was 4 1/2 pounds. I usually get one or two every year that go over 4 pounds.
