What color stands out best from a distance for marking sets. Bought some pink surveyors ribbon but that seems too light of a color and is harder to see from a distance than I would have thought. You guys have a color that works better for you? Might use it on a stick or weed to indicate a catch from a distance too. Any other simple ideas other than the plastic ribbon would be appreciated too. This is in open county with brown grass as the back ground most of the time. Thanks

I have used the orange before and it sticks out quite a bit to me in a treebelt. This year I switched to pink and neon green and I can see my ribbon from across a cattail slough most of the time. I know some guys when snaring in tall grass will take a piece of ribbon near their snare/ cable and they'll know if it catches anything if they can't see the ribbon.

I had good luck with bright green. Got a couple fencerows I use it on, just a wrap and short tie ends off the top wire
Near the set. When it snows there are no real differentiating features along that fencerow to find my sets. The flagging stands out against brown dead grass when nothing else is green there in winter, has no cedars along it either. I can usually find the marking tape easily in my flashlight.
Got a roll of it, plastic bright green, at a hardware store in tool section by the wire flags.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I use something that blends in or is camo.
I know where my sets are & dont want to draw attention to my sets.
I just use flag sticks in a way to see if my set has made a catch

But if ya have areas that are remote or dont mind drawing attention a bright color is fine

Till that day.....

Yes sir you may need to try several colors to see which one you see best. At my job we use a lot of flagging tape. Both in public areas - roadways, buildings, etc and in wooded areas and fields like you would be using it. If you have any degree of color blindness, like a lot of people do, certain colors just don't work. Especially in the woods and fields. For me, the neon green and pink are the hardest to see in the woods. Even with a mostly brown background. Orange, yellow, and red seem to be easiest for me to see. Some of the guys i work with seem to be able to spot any of them without any problems, reguardless of background. Another thing to keep in mind is that the neon pink, neon green, and pink seem to fade faster and do not survive temps below 20 degrees as well as the other colors in my experience. The flagging tape that has a texture to it survives the colder temps better too. The really slick, shiny stuff gets very brittle in the cold and just crumbles .

I have to mark my traps to keep them from being run over…I use that orange marking tape you have to cut, thick stuff, and tie it to dog fennels and place it behind the set a couple of feet. I can see it from a distance and what’s more important is workers can see it. Traps that aren’t marked seem to be tire magnets!!!

Color phases of orange/ and fluorescent seem to be the most easily seen from my experience. I have used them on land and in marsh areas. I have tried most colors over the years. You walk a thin line for advertising to others what and where things are, with making it easier to find some sets that may be difficult to distinguish in some environments or unfamiliar new areas.

Terrain markings and agricultural areas can change overnight due to storms and farming practices.

Flo orange or Flo pink against light backgrounds (grass, cattails, etc.) , yellow against dark backgrounds ( trees, creek banks, etc.) . My tip - I keep 2 large plastic containers (clear mixed nut types are the best) with the separate colors tied on clothes pins (have for 30 years). Make the set. clip the pin, gone. ................................. the mike

P.S. years before Flo ribbon I used aluminum cans on my canoe lines (until the deposit payment was established) and now I color paint my fiberglass stakes for rats in the marsh for both length and locating. Could write pages on what has failed and worked through high theft and no competition years,........................ the mike

You got it Mike. I have all my Tally poles painted on the top 12" along with a Flo ribbon. In cattails and a Marsh setting it's the best way to go at the moment.

Up close ?
A) Purple and green.
(and yes, I realize those two colors are natural as an attractant fluttering like a brown or even black/white combination would be.)

* 'Cats can actually see those two colors better than any other colors.

At a distance ?
A) White, if the ground isn't snow covered.

* White isn't actually a color, it's a neutral .

Crap, he meant for a water set laugh

Studies show that Chartreuse can be seen farther than any color known to man.
Why do you think road crews have gone to it over florescent orange ???

Some survey tape has silver reflective stripes in it every 4 inches = really helps if you are water trapping in the twilight periods = flash light shine = sets
for water trapping

I find that blue shows up well where I use it. Some colors can blend into surroundings more than others. Yellow or even white for example doesn’t show up as well in farmland here because most of the vegetation is senesced during trapping season and yellow blends right in. Blue for me if Im marking sets.

I use reflective orange taps that come with clips on them. They are used for marking trails, and make great markers as they reflect light from a flashlight. I never mark my traps with them, but mark on the trail of where I go in. Sometimes I even use my compass to get a bearing to the trap sets from the trail marker. I trap both state and private land, I trust no one when it comes to my traps, even on private land.

I was wondering if anyone else used the reflective tape that is often used in cherry orchards to deter birds?

I had let a neighbor hunt on my Farm when 3 traps came up missing. I reset them and put up Trail Cams. I caught him stealing my Traps after I let him hunt om my Farm. What a POS!!!

God please keep they 19 fallen UBB miners out of trouble up there.

I have had traps and animals stolen on private land, and it sucks, especially when you know who did it. You should see how many alligators I have stolen each year off of lines. I'm a firm believer in marking nothing.

All of my sets are GPS in but when I do use color tape for marking my sets, it is green or sometimes blue. When I do mark a set, it is marked 10 to 15' to the side of the set.
