Id get him SK ratchets then a warrant set of sockets nothing worst then a lousy ratchet to make a job even harder I have a later Craftsman 1/4 inch ratchet that seldom leaves the toolbox. The flimsy plastic selector flops around like a carp and never stays in place, hate it.

Sears had many demises over the years but splitting the marketing teams internally into Sears Brand and Craftsman Brand- was the worst idea, it created infighting and the Craftsman Team prostituted the brand to other Home Centers and hardware stores- why would you drive traffic out of your own store with a powerhouse brand like that, Craftsman was a destination purchase item! They were already real-estate incumbered by a demographic that wears cut-off sleeve T-Shirts and work boots not wanting to go to the mall on Saturday morning to buy tools, the beginning of the end. Rant over.

I remember looking for something that was in the sales flyer at the store once the salesperson got all huffy and said they had nothing to do with the sale flyer, that was the last trip I made to that store.

Yup- and do you ever get into the Online vs Brick & Mortar store discussion... "Hey you had this listed for less on your online store " They act like your cross shopping a different retail store- "oh, we have nothing to do with that"???

Exactly

Or you drive 40 miles and they say..."That's not in our store. It's only online. You can order it to our store though"

I had a forty-plus year old Craftsman 1/2" ratchet start acting up. It wouldn't engage when switching directions unless I thumped it on something solid. I emailed Sears. They asked for a receipt. I said it was long gone. They ask for a picture. I sent them two. They replaced it for free with a new soft grip 1/2" drive ratchet.

I hope it holds up as well as the last one which I kept just in case it doesn't.

These are as nice of hand tools as available today. An added bonus is that the size notations are large and in red for sae and in black for metric, large enough for an older set of eyes.

I’ll clear out some PMs when I get a chance.

No, I have not taken it apart and tried to repair it. It still works, I just gotta give it a thump on the side that I want it to turn to when I change directions.

Eh...wot?

And cruise Craigslist, fb marketplace, ebay etc. Occasionally you can find a deal. Follow local auctioneers online to see if they are dispersing an auto shop, construction business farm, etc

This^^^

Hit up the pawn shops too. You can get the older American made Craftsman tools for a decent price.

I do have a lot of harbor freight stuff I bought for certain projects. They hold up better than you'd expect but for the OP's needs, I'd choose S-K.

I did this a couple weeks ago on a few that were acting up. All but one works now good as new. The other had broken parts inside and was 40 years old. It was 1/2" drive with a long handle so after a little welding I now have another breaker bar. smile

if your looking for a good tool , good warranty , easy to get sent right to you and easy to return if you break it and

my favorite , no skips if you get a set 10 to 36mm then you get every mm in between no skipping the 18mm that you will need later or one of the others that so many sets like to skip

https://www.tekton.com/

you can check out reviews , their old name was Michigan industrial tool.
no not all of their tools are us made some are , more and more but gear wrench and many matco and all craftsman and many of the Milwaukee and dewalt and husky and cobalt are all foreign also.

Lowes and Ace warrantee Crafsman and they are decent , man do they skip sizes on sets , drives me nuts but if you watch for a good sale you can a decent starter set at ace.

that said Tekton wrenches and sockets are nice and no skips and if you break it you take a picture of it , send it to them with the online form right from your phone and they send you a new one

Craftsman sockets are complete junk, but their thinness comes in handy sometimes...just not strong.

S-K was bought out, shut down for a while, and then reopened. Not sure on the new quality or how easy they are to find.
