A small tracking device is placed in the antler and the antler is then placed out in the woods for someone to find. The authorities are able to locate the antler if an individual were to move it (take it home). Many places do not allow antler removal at all or only during certain time periods.

So it's ok to disturb wildlife by placing an entrapment object in a so called " protected " area , but not ok to remove it ?

We have alot of winter road closures here on public lands to " protect wildlife " . Almost no predator control as a result . Lots of dead deer
It hasn't worked and won't but the department of fish and wildlife know best

I guess you all think using decoys for poachers is entrapment as well? The antler is laying there and you pick it up that is not entrapment. You made the choice to break the law. We're talking about areas that do not allow antler gathering or have winter range closures to protect wintering animals which by the way are struggling this winter across the West.
Agree with part of it but using decoys to get poachers nope there is no law about shooting a decoy they get you for shining , shooting from the road etc, they do it here in Illinois but not once has that stopped a poacher that shoots a buck and cuts off the skull cap and I have seen this numerous times . They don't catch these guys because of laziness and the decoy is all about getting money. As for sheds they have the same B.S. rules on public ground here to but last I recall our tax money buys the ground and they try to determine how we should get to use it and if a a politician found a shed on public ground they would go out of their way to let them keep it.

Stay legal and it should not be a worry. Just because you do not agree with a law, doesn't mean you should break it.

Reading the first post I thought, if ya need GPS in yer shed, its probably time to tidy it up a little bit, so ya can find the door without it. Reading on I learned something else. When finding a antler , inspect it carefully and if it has a GPS tracking devise in it, leave the shed, take the GPS and drive it 50 miles down and interstate, then fling it out the window, preferably or a ravine bridge or into the muddy middle bit. I would probably do the 40 minutes drive and drop the thing of in Kentucky Go home, have a drink and smile.

Nobody fights the overreach of some game depts at what point is everything not “theirs” I go around here with them on several things they can’t seem to let go of.
If you hit a deer here it’s yours not theirs unless it’s a trophy rack then it’s theirs again just how do horns change the ownership like that? They take no responsibility for “their” deer running loose when they claim ownership up to the time it runs out in front of you then it your deer. LOL
Same with trapping you buy a license then catch tag say a bobcat now if you sell it to a taxidermist he needs a fur buyers license because he’s considered a commercial user even though he’s not a fur buyer really.
If you find a rack in the woods attached to the skull you can’t pick it up here if you have a rack that you tagged and shot that looks the same they think they can take it not knowing the story behind it. Don’t agree with that never ending in and out ownership claims based on I can do it thinking. FYI the racks they pile up go on a state auction if not to a mount for whatever purpose.

As far as I am concerned they will be treated on my property like any other trespassing idiot that did not read the signs telling them to keep out.

Shed hunting in Montana is legal except in areas closed which are certain winter game ranges. People who do this in these areas early are thieves and several have been prosecuted for it. These areas are controlled to protect spring calving seasons and to make it fairer for all. Its a big event with hundreds lining up to per take.

Since the Statute of Limitations has run its course.....I'm sure glad they didn't have this level of technology years ago when I was working on a trail crew in Yellowstone National Park.
I found a winter-killed bull elk with about 355" of antler up Soda Butte Ck in the Lamar Valley.
Not only did I take it out to the road and smuggle it out of the park, but I packed it out to the road on a horse owned by the NPS!
It was one of my earliest environmental "crimes!" I was 18 that summer.
Pete That makes me smile Pete!!!!!
