I used to send my beaver tails to Specialty Leather Tannery in Iowa and I see they are now out of business. Any other tanneries provide this type of service? Thanks!

There will be any number of people watching this thread, looking for a place that does the quality of work that Speciality did.

Good Luck!

I talked to the person who bought specialty leathers equipment back around November some time. He told me they were running test batches to get dyeing and tanning solutions correct so they could start operations. They are located in Barnesville Minnesota. The company is Hough Fur Company. there phone # 701-306-2330. I haven't called them back yet so don't know if there tanning yet.

I checked their website (Hough) and there is no mention of beaver tail tanning yet.

If you've never done skin before, I don't think you'll get it right the first time.

I have all the chemicals to do it, I am waiting for nicer weather to start. I will be doing some of my coons and coyotes. I was just wondering if it is more difficult

I'm sorry, but what is described in the article is not the dressing of beaver's tail skin.

Perhaps you could elaborate more. Personally I have never processed a beavertail so can only go by this person's account. We all know that information on the net is accurate wink

I asked a tannery about it, Leather tanning is entirely different than Fur tanning. Different chemicals and process.

Another hit for info, please ! If you are a viable source for tails, you will have plenty to do if the cost
is doable, and your finish what I'm looking for, I promise you work !!

Saw the beavertail wallet thread come up and figured I would throw this to the top. Going to trap some flatties this winter and I need to get enough for a bowyer friend of mine. Whats happening with the outfit who bought specialty leathers outfit?

The outfit that bought Specialties equipment is working with a company in Pakistan who already tans beaver tails in volume for other customers. They hope to be able to offer a means to get tails tanned by the company in Pakistan. They said they are not able to offer the service in house at this time.

I also spoke to Ryan Moyle at the NTA and he indicated that they plan to offer beaver tail tanning at some time in the future but did not have a timeline for doing so.
