smaller package that is more per unit than if you bought the larger one at the grocery store or other store , but since they count on the convenience of it being close to the trailer park and the pay check to pay check consumer and their lack of math proficiency. they thrive.
We have Dollar Tree here... went up to a Buck twenty-five. They put in one isle of 3 to 5 dollars .
I only go into Dollar General when I have to in Deadwood SD. Dollar tree / family dollar is going in right next door to the Dollar general , it is PRIME grade A real-estate apparently right across the road from the trailer park. the trailer park just got bought by new management so I expect lot rent will jump soon and all the early 70s single wides will be forced out and it won't be a place dollar shoppers will be able to afford any more , might be sad if all the dollar stores run each other out.

I will say , when you need poster board for a kids project due the next day at 7:45pm cause they just told you , it is a handy place to have around.
it beats driving 20 miles each way for 88 cents in poster board (I might be dating myself with that price)

Dollar General here is nice. Go to it all the time. Cleaning supplies especially laundry detergent are priced great.
Buy lots of dried fruit cheap also Never been to a Dollar General, but I have been to a Dollar Store a couple of times. I tried the laundry detergent; yes it was cheap, but it was so watered down that you had to use at least two or three times as much of it as any national brand. I used to buy reading glasses there, not anymore, they fall apart within days. Mostly Chinese and other foreign junk imo. Buy name brand stuff not dollar store brand. Cheaper than all other stores

Maybe they bought the building already there. Sounds like they want to have a store in every county in the US sounds like a tall task but we have them in some smaller towns here already.

Normally if dollar general puts in a store, family dollar will put one in on the same block. We have at least 12 or 15 in our county.
