Me too, Jack. I never want to jell the heart, back straps, or any other part of meaty potential. Shots in the slats work, but I don't like them to run any distance before collapsing. I love spine shots, but even neck meat I would like to have , if possible.

Gotta be a bit careful, that neck roast is awfully good.
I like Whites thought, base of the ear. DRT.

Osky, that's right. The only reason I don't aim for Jack's area, right behind the eye , is that when I want to keep the antlers , for nutritious antler art...I aim just under the ear, not too far forward. Essentially the base of the ear, too. Right where the neck vertebrae connects with the head bone smile

Depending on the angle you will either take out the brain or the Atlas joint. DRT is right.

The fools advocating headshots for the first shot should have their hunting privileges revoked.
1) you probably aren’t as good of a shot as you think you are, especially on game in the heat of the moment (but your false bravado is cute)
2) a deer can easily move its head very quickly in the split second of a shot
These two things result in crippling loss and slow death.
Shoot the shoulder, or just behind it in the ribs if you are worried about meat - nice big easy target, guaranteed to kill.
If you have NEVER missed a shot on a target or deer, then by all means aim for the fist-sized target on a live animal, but no one can honestly make that claim.

anywhere within 2 inches of the Axis vertebra and the deer is down with a spinal dislocation with the shock wave.

But it does take a good steady hand and know what the deer is going to do.
Based on one foot forward with that deer it is ready to bolt.....if you read it's tail and ear location you base your shot

Read the big picture before the shot

I used to pin the shoulders , aim for the opposite shoulder. It’s deadly, anchors them . Then I learned how to smoke the shoulders. When slow smoked properly, that’s some fine dining! Now I try to save them, so mostly shoot through the rib cage now.

This is very good advice,

if one sucks at precision shooting in the field.

Deer has 3 off buttons Only one is numbered and an option on this target 2 is no wiggle not even a step . If I’m shootin does it neck / head shots the other 2 off buttons If they run you missed . A deer has a “kill “ zone the size of a basket ball in its chest . Angle distance or direction the deer is moving changes that point of aim . For you guys that say you hold left or right up or down of any of these numbers to “ avoid” meat damage is full of it . First and only thought any hunter has is kill that deer ! Not if you aim 2 inches to the left I won’t “ jelly “ the heart ! Lol lol lol a jelly heart is a dead deer every time
