Years back I targeted nutria. I had one basic set when first setting up. It was a pocket set with a fairly deep step down made high on steep banks so it stayed active in rising waters. Every set got tail oil. I used a no2 trap. Caught a bunch of beaver with the nutes and no need for downers as it is pretty hard for a beaver to chew out of a trap that small.

So, you caught beaver on BTO?

Usually sac oil from one of their own colony.

I have observed that younger beaver in the family group do not necessarily work the castor sets the way the older beaver do. I see this in ponds quite a bit but it could be anywhere. I always keep the oil sacs of the big female and have used a single drop per set to catch those pesky holdouts that would not work the plain castor sets. The explanation that sac oil does not elicit a territorial response make sense. It is as if the younger beaver (a year old or less) are not conditioned to the territorial response yet but they will sure check out the sac oil.

That it is attractive to the kits would be a downside for me. I'm always trying to avoid catching the little guys.

Yep, works great for also. I have found no difference also.

That is the difference in fur trapping versus damage control. The last one is the one I am after!

I watched a dude from iowa do a demo on beaver and he cut his sac oil with mineral oil I think. Squirted it out of bottle using sneaky sets. Worked well for him!

Thanks for all the responses. I'm going to do some experimentation next season and see what happens.

Will sac oil keep in a fridge to use the next year?

Then I throw the stick/straw into the water so the oil will spread out leaving a trail on the surface. It doesn't initiate a territorial response. I usually set a foothold for a front foot catch. I don't use 330s, because most of the beavers I use this on are already educated. This is one of those tricks my pappy taught me.

Exactly! I have one of his books where he uses it when beaver shy away from other scents, especially those that are castor-based.

I had taken 4 beaver out of a nuisance job a while back, 3 kits and a larger male. The female would shy away from all my sets. Then, I remembered reading about your dad mentioning using sac oil. I used it with his poplar stump set. I had her the next day. I got a lot of good ideas from that booklet.

Wonder what kinda ratio? If you only need a few drops 1 set of sacs cut 50/50 should make a bunch of sets.

If the oil is clean, it should keep for long periods of time without even being refrigerated. I have a bottle of it that I have had in my fish cleaning house for almost 20 years with no refrigeration and it still seems to work for me. It smells pretty original, so it still gets used on some of my sets. Beaver get caught so it must be OK.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

Grow weed.
More fun than potatos.

Dont smoke any weed during trapping season-it will turn you into a lazy lump.

Already did that (legal hemp). No money in it though. BTW, weed is not one of my vices...I stick to beer and wine, homemade preferred.
