Anyone had one? How is it now? Going to need one down the road and the Doc said it’ll be like I was 30 again, lol.

I had both done. Left in 2008 ( age 50 ), right in 2012. Both healed up fast, and I never had any problems with either.

I had one done in 2002 (at age 50) and the other one done on March 22, 2023. First one took me almost a year to return completely to normal. This one has been just over 4 weeks and the hip feels almost like new. In doing the replacement they sprained my knee on the same side as the replacement and that has been giving me a lot of trouble walking. The last few days it has started to improve. Hip is healed but the knee is still all black and blue. All that being said "Get 'er" Done".

I’m just happy to know from todays visit that I can’t screw it up anymore and go as hard and long as I can, as long as I can take the pain associated with it. I go back June 1 to decide.
I leave the 29th for the PMW again and come back May 13. I can hunt a few days and then rest a day if needed.
He said we could do a shot next visit, but if I go with a shot I have to wait 6 months before getting surgery. If I do that, that will screw up next turkey season. I’d rather ruin deer season than turkey season, lol. The only other issue is the wife has a cruise planned June and December.
He did say the first few weeks was painful, but promised I’d feel like a brand new man afterwards.

Just had my other replaced three weeks ago...like the others have said....don't wait... get it NOW. You'll be healed up in no time. BUT do some PRE-HAB work...walking both front and backwards...side to side shuffle (done slow), lifting light weights to tolerance...it really speeds the healing process.

depending on your age, a hip resurfacing might be a better option...look into it.... had a hip resurfaced at age 43....it's the only joint in my body that doesn't hurt.... grin...but I have zero restrictions on movement /actions

I had my second replacement on a Tuesday morning, I went back to my office the following Monday. Went trout fishing 13 days after the surgery, and was back crawling underground at work in three weeks. Getting the staples out at day 12 is a game changer….feels much better when they come out.

Had bilateral hip replacements 5 years ago, was back on the boat working in 6 weeks, Just had bilateral knee replacements 8 weeks ago, cleared for work now.

Find the surgeon in your area that does a lot of them, follow ALL directions exactly, do pre surgery exercises, do the post op physical therapy and don't be afraid to push the reps and weights, within reason.

But make no mistake, the first 2 weeks are challenging for both operations, it gets better fast though....singles are pretty easy as a rule, and hips are easier than knees.

Had left hip done on 12/17/15 - two weeks later we were in Pasadena going to the Rose Bowl and scampering all over the USS IOWA. I wouldn’t hesitate to do the other one if needed.!

my only regret is not doing it sooner. as others have said, the better shaper you are going in, the quicker the recovery. I only took 2 days off work, but i sit behind a computer. only limitation is no more running/high impact training. still run around the yard with the kids and backpack hunt, trap, you name it. haven't looked back in 9yrs. 52 yo when i had my left hip done. went through the back side - old school - 9in scar.

I had my right hip replaced at last Oct and was hunting deer in a just afew weeks. The hip really never hurt much before the surgery but I was told my back problems were being made way worse due to my hip and left knee being beyond shot. I really never slowed down much with the new hip... took it slow for a couple weeks and then just did my normal routine. Now my left hip seems to be hurting more than it should on a 66 year old plum wore out older man (me). Guess I'll be replacing that one also.. then my other knee. I am glad I had such good luck with the knee and hip ... and yes it did help with the back..... somewhat !!

Thanks guys. Apparently I’ve played to hard leading up to adulthood and frankly, never stopped. I have 3 different impingements, two spurs, a cyst growing on my femur, and bone on bone contact. I’m 55 and relatively good shape. Always been active and still am despite the pain. Leave next week for a two week romp in the PNW. May go ahead and get it this summer after our cruise. If you’re gonna be laid up or off work for a little while it might as well be when the trapping sucks, lol. Tough catching critters in July and August anyways.

I agree! Full replacements aren't always the answer.

As of yesterday, I fear I am going to end up having to go down the hip replacement route. Starting in January, I had 10 weeks of physical therapy on my right knee and right hip. After 6 weeks they injected my knee with cortisone. 5 weeks ago they injected my Iliopsoas tendon with cortisone. Yesterday they told me they are going schedule an MRI on my hip and very likely will have to perform surgery to repair my labrum. There's a 20% chance that they will have to do a hip replacement afterwards.

Do as Mike said. I have had both replaced. For the first surgery I did not do much to get ready. For the second surgery I trained a lot more, and it really made a lot of difference. You can train as you see fit or ask the PT what would be the best things to do.
Good luck

Mac

I hope squats ain’t on the list, lol. Even just one plate on each side is rough! Still doing light deadlifts and leg presses.

Wish they can do that for me but the arthritis is too far advanced in my hip. Looking a 2 complete replacements, getting my second opinion next week.

Got bored today and a WMA finally finished up its quota hunts so I went walking. Got in 5.3 miles, with a few sits in that mileage. Hips a little on the sore side, but I’ll know MORE in the morning, lol.
I’ll mention resurfacing, but I don’t know if that’ll work with no cartilage around the socket. Good news is my right hip looks like a model hip!!

Hate to resurrect this but how long before y’all were like “normal”? Like climbing a ladder stand? Maybe even using a climber?
I realize I’ll probably miss dove season and early archery season, but later in the season I’m hoping to get after it.
If surgery is August 1 then next Spring (late April) I should be ok to climb mountains in the PNW?

And for this isn’t a post to sound like I don’t want to have surgery, if you think that then you’re misreading, lol. I’d do it next week if they had an opening. I can’t walk more than half a mile without having to stop and rest and stretch. I guess my gait is off and it’s killing my back and knee. Just wanting to plan my Fall and next Spring.
