If you like old time atmosphere of a Texas dance hall........check out The Broken Spoke. Good music and pie.
If you prefer blues or zydeco, head for Antone's. I recall listening to C.J Chenier....son of Clifton Chenier.........the King of Zydeco...............back in 1990
There is a salvaged shipwreck and it's artifacts from 1685 in the Bullock Museum in Austin. It was part of a failed French colony. They tried to WALK up to Montreal for help. Didn't work out....
you can vote your way into socialism, but you will have to shoot your way out.
Just now seeing this so hoping you're still around Austin.
Since your in south Austin, definitely take the trip out to Driftwood to the Saltlick and get some bbq. Its expensive, but very good. I hate going to downtown Austin now as it has become Texas' own little San Francisco, but the bat emergence at Congress Avenue bridge over the river is pretty dang cool. 1.5 million mexican freetails emerge there every evening.
On your way down to San Antonio, stop in San Marcos at the Aquarena Center and do the glass bottom boat ride tour. Really cool. They also have on display some of the oldest indian artifacts ever found in Texas due to the immensity of that Spring and people been living there for so long. After that go down on the square in San Marcos and get you the 'Works Burger' from the Tap Room and enjoy about any kind of beer your could ever imagine. You want be disappointed on the burger.
Little further south is Gruene Hall and New Braunfels; all kinds of good German stuff to see, do, and eat there.
Definitely do the tour at the Alamo, it is worth it. If you like Museums and artifacts, the San Antonio Museum of Fine Arts is pretty dang impressive. Definitely get you some good Mexican Food on the River Walk. If you have the time, make the trip out west a little bit and go see Lost Maples State Natural Area. After that drive on in to Utopia and definitely eat at Lost Maples Cafe. Chancey

I have never ate at Franklin's Steven. I sure need to try it.
I do know that a short drive south of Austin to a little town called Luling has some of the best pork ribs I've ever eaten in my life at the City Market. Smitty's Market in Lockhart is pretty dang good too. Their pork chops are the bomb!

This past winter I was down in Oklahoma and swung over to Memphis Texas one day and had some ribs at a little roadside stand. Hands down the best I ever had in my life. I would guess the only rub with salt and pepper, cooked on an offset smoker, didn't need any flavor killing barbecue sauce and best ribs I've ever had hands down.
I use my pellet grill a lot because I'm lazy, it doesn't compare.

Cooked low and slow over a heat source far away. Got to use sop though to baste them every now and then. I used to do it with a can of beer, butter, seasoning, and some worschersire sauce and basted them.
Now, I just put apple juice in a spray bottle and spray em with it when they need it. Easier, and taste just as good.

Well we fly out tonight, we ate at the Original Black's BBQ yesterday in San Marcos, had ribs, pork belly and brisk only problem was I wished I had 2 stomachs, that was some tasty BBQ. Went to the Alamo pretty powerful history to take in there worth the trip. Went down to the river walk and got some huge ice cream cones and then spent some time driving around in the rental convertible looking at the old buildings. Not sure what's on the agenda for today but I appreciate all the suggestions!
