It is all in pollination, the one thing that sustains life on earth.
I could make three what they pay if I used our land contract.

Today is a gift, that is why it is called the present

No. You are sucking off of the tax payers !!! laugh

In all seriousness CRP is good government welfare
as long as the public are allowed to trap, hunt, & fish on it.

Wish I knew about that program 25 years ago! I looked at several farms in 2020 that had sign up part of the acreage on crep program. Over the 15 years the entire farm was more than paid for ! One example was they had 60 of the 125 acres enrolled. Total income was 8600 per year for 15 years . It had 5 years left at the time . But the guy that owned it only paid 78,000 in 1995 when he bought it .

It was in the green river watershed area.
If I only knew?!

I miss CRP around here. We had thousands of acres in it and wildlife was booming. Everything benefitted. Pheasants, deer, you name it we had more of it back then.
Good for you!
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

If you don't mind .gov telling you how you can use your land I see no problem with it. I myself wouldn't if I already owned the land but in a case like jbyrd mentioned I might.

My father-in law was in CREP paid good money, but proliferated Canada thistle, neighboring farms were (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) about thistle. Other younger farmers renting land were (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) because it CREP drove up the price of farmland rent.
He was even paid good money for saplings planted along the creek. Deer ate ever tree and the riparian buffer never got established, he he collected the money no problem.

Technically yes but I suspect you're not a crack ho with 8 kids on welfare.

CRP actually provides a benefit to society. You are forgoing production to enable that benefit via contract with the government.

Other federal ag programs are even more welfare-like but even then it's not quite the same as the crack ho. It's complicated to reconcile. We'd be better off if we just got rid of all of it but we are likely too far down the road to turn around now.

If you happen to have gotten in on the big sign up in Iowa a few years ago, my dogs thank you.

Not much in Crp around here. But there's plenty of other weird government programs to take it's place such as conservation easements etc. I'm not knowledgeable enough to really have a say on the subject.

Yes but it's easier to justify it than some other welfare programs

Thistles are good for pollination. I know row crop farmers hate them.

Gov. should get out of farming all together, but will never happen.

Been involved in agriculture my entire life and have had this discussion many many many times with others in agriculture. It always ends with, well if I'm not taking the money someone else would be. Which isn't a sound reason for government subsidies.

I’d rather anyone in agriculture get my tax dollars than sending them overseas

It was Reagans' too little too late attempt to save the family farms, after the previous administration had proclaimed the world was starving and the American Farmer needed to plant fence row to fence row.
Well at least we starved the Russians out !
The saying in the markets that the "Russians Are Coming" soon faded out, but the Russians haven't disappeared have they?

I think some of the farm payments are questionable. Assistance with pollinator plantings benefit everyone. I just partnered with our state game and fish agency on a pollinator planting. They supplied herbicide and seed and plantar. I supplied tractor, fuel, sprayer, disk, and labor.

I also one time bought a piece of ground that had been row cropped. And annual crop subsidy was paid. I took the land out of ag - but still received the payment. I called NRCS and told them to stop paying me. They thought I was nuts - but stopped sending checks. I know another guy who did the same thing. Turned row crop ground into food plots and cover. They paid him over $4000 a year - for 20 years. $100,000 for him to have a deer hunting spot.
