I don’t know if we are a the original organic farmers, or that we were to poor to purchase spay.
In the summer after the crops were to high to cultivate, we were sent to the fields, with a hoe and had to remove the existing weed.
Hot as heck,
Always paid of at the elevator. (Grain reserving station)

Today is a gift, that is why it is called the present

Hay when I was luckey enough to get a ride out of the city and out to my families in the country. When in town I mowed yards, raked leafs, helped my neibor that was older move comershial washing machines and dryers I p and down stairs as his company required him to do in apartments. Always more money to be made in town but I enjoyed putting up hay and all that went with it

Yep. Fifty cents an hour. They would probably call it child slave labor, now.

Yes, I still drive by bean fields and notice weeds and old corn and shatter Cain growing up higher than the beams.
Clean bean fields look great.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Walking beans, picking rocks, baling hay, it's how I got money in my pocket for quite a few summers. Hard work but good times.

Grandparents had a big garden. Don't remember walking beans but dang sure shelled a bunch of peas, snapped beans, dug onions and potatoes and picked everything else that was growing.

Got big enough and we hauled hay. Adults threw the bales on trailer and the kids stacked. Started early enough it would take 2 of us to lift a bale up a level. Having to fill an old abandoned farm house with the hay was the worst, bumble bees were the second worst
Would gladly do it today just to spend time with the ones that are no longer with us
Never got paid a dime either, all for family

Walking beans, picking rocks, haying, a normal way of life before chemicals.
My father grew certified seed oats. Carry a burlap bag to put thistles, sweet clover, mustard and weeds to burn in the farm yard.
They claimed that some farms didn't have certain weeds until they invented combines that spread them from farm to farm.

When I was a young'un in Ohio, my uncle, who is three months younger than me, and I would hoe grandma's garden. The rows were about 50 yards long, and she paid us each a nickel a row to hoe. When we got enough money, we would get on our bikes and pedal three miles to the store and buy BBs. When we ran out of BBs, we'd do it all over again.

The vines would grow out from the hill. We would walk along and pull them around, lining them back up with the hill so they could be cultivated without damaging them.

Hard to imagine that my feet didnt rot off..... we were usually soaked from the waist down by dew on the beans every morning. Our feet would look like we had been in a swimming pool for hours by the time we called it a day. Lay your shoes in the sun when you got home and hoped they would dry out a bit by morning. Dust off the hay bales stuck to the sweat on your exposed skin and a garden hose never looked so good at the end of the day.
