The pellets never slow up...pass thru bird. I've killed three gobblers past 2 seasons with TSS...all were about 35 to 40 yds. Have yet to find a single pellet in the breast.

Can't say this with lead ammo.

I saw 5 rounds of .410 TSS today at our local farm store for $41.99. It might be cheaper to hit the gas and take one with my bumper. crazy

TSS doesn’t get lodged in birds, at least none that I have shot. Even at longer ranges which I DO NOT condone or recommend, even if they hit the breast they generally catch a feather and push it all the way through and you’ll find it when cleaning the bird. TSS goes completely through. People recycle TSS by patterning one 1/8” metal and hanging thick carpet behind it. They have a tray down below to shake the TSS caught to gather up and reload again.

At 40 yards with the right choke 90% of the charge will be in a 10" circle.
there is 365 #9 tss to the oz.

And the weight of the TSS means it has and holds penetrating power much better than lead and usually is a clean pass thru so no pellets to pick out.

Ok, thanks all for the info.

TSS has a higher density (smaller frontal area for the equivalent pellet weight in lead) and is running at the same or faster velocity. Thus higher energy per pellet, which is not able to be fully absorbed by the target on impact, leading to full pellet pass through. Likened to a high velocity rifle bullet on big game vs buckshot.

But how does it shoot such tight patterns? I have never seen patterns so tight. I understand how so many turkey hunters miss after patering tss. Before that I couldn't understand how they missed with a shotgun.

Disregarding the construction of the shell, pattern tightness is basically a function of two things: density and hardness

A more dense, hard shot has a natural tendency to hold together

A dense, soft shot needs to be choked tighter. Think lead shot. It maintains its patterns because its density allows it to maintain a higher downrange velocity. It doesn't loose speed as fast as a lighter shot material does

A low density, hard shot patterns tighter initially but as the range increases its low density causes it to come apart and have fliers. Think steel shot. Steel density is so light that it loses velocity rapidly. This causes the pattern to get erratic

A high density, high hardness shot (TSS) is the best of both worlds. It's super high density allows it to maintain very high downrange velocities, keeping the pattern consistent. Its hardness means it will stay together very well out of the barrel and it won't require as tight of a choke

[/quote] Is the tss penetrating the 1/8 inch steel and the carpet is stopping it on the backside, or is it not going thru and the carpet is collecting it on the front side.

Cletis, I tried to build a shot trap out of the horse stall mats you buy at tractor supply. At 40 yards #9 tss shot through them like a knife through hot butter

From what I’ve seen, the carpet is thick and they shake it out so I’m assuming it stops it or gets lodged in it.

TSS is loaded slightly different as well with different wads and chokes that are made for it. That wad protects the inside of your barrel and exits with the shot intact inside the wad. It’s expensive, but it is devastating on anything shot with it. I have stoned hogs at 30+ yards with #9 shot. Stoned means hogs immediately drop and all 4 feet in the air. These are head shots when they get a little too close while turkey hunting. Coyotes literally just drop. I buy 2 boxes every few months, I’m up to 12 boxes and will buy a couple more when I get back of my vacation. I use Apex and they are a pleasure to buy from. If they don’t have what I want online, I’ll call them up and they always manage to find a couple of boxes in the warehouse. They accidentally sent three boxes one time so I called them up and paid for it. Next time I ordered they sent an extra box for being a “loyal and honest” customer. Great folks.

Yes sir. It is great for stationary hunting but NOT recommended for drives and dog hunting. Effective to such a long distance it could be very dangerous shooting it in proximity to people
