A little late; was on the road the past couple days. Still a bit of snow here under the eaves, but trying to be spring. Found a couple snakes at lower elevations the last couple days, but thought a spring bird photo array might be warranted this time of year. These were all taken from my back porch last year about May day. This year, because of the delayed spring, we as yet have had virtually no leaf-out, even in the willows, cottonwoods, and chokecherries. Hope you enjoy, and I hope you all will chime in with your own photos. Sharon will grace us with some artwork?

Lewis' Woodpecker. These things become a pest as our cherries ripen. They take every ripe cherry.

Black-headed Grosbeak. Only get these guys in migration.
[Linked Image]

Evening Grosbeak. Beautiful, and they work our black oil sunflower seeds voraciously.
[Linked Image]

Rose-breasted Grosbeak. One adult male only. This is quite a ways west of their typical range. Last year was the first time I've seen them in Idaho, and I sure hope he returns this year. Sure nice to see a new species for the state.
[Linked Image]

Lazuli Bunting. Pretty common all summer as a breeder here in our yard. Though for me, hard to get a decent picture.

Nice pics. I saw our first Broad Tailed Hummer yesterday. We went from snow two weeks ago to 80 degrees yesterday I knew the summer birds would be here soon. We get a lot of Evening Grosbeak but have not seen the others here.

Very nice.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

Lovely shots, Jack. Spring is late here too. I miss hearing one of my favorites, the Varied Thrush. Among the most wonderful , thoughtful songs to me. Hummers haven't shown yet, but should any time. Love Black Headed Grosbeaks. Their song is wonderful. Uncommon bird to see, they like big thick forests here.

The next was quite a unique privilege to see, years ago while traveling the Palouse country in central Idaho. Along the highway, sitting on fence posts, in late afternoon sun, were a group of ravens. One was pure white. They were lined up, facing the sun, just like that. The image burned in my head. I wish I had a camera. In contacting a world renowned biologist , who specifically studies ravens all over the world, he informed me that this sighting was indeed rare. Himself, of all the ravens he has seen, has never seen a white one. I sent him a print of this image. He wrote the book " The Mind Of the Raven". Along with others. He said it was a family group I saw. In the late sunlight, he gleamed like carved ivory.

And last...something I have sought for ...I saw this hair broach in use ..by a martial arts master. Carved beautifully out of hardwood, a raven, solid black. A thing of beauty , worn in the hair ...but a lethal weapon when used correctly. Elegant, and lethal at the same time. In deft handling, the master flipped it just so in his fingers, and with a turn of his body for momentum, flung it as a dagger into a wood surface. Us students were transfixed. Used on the right area of head , neck, or solar plexus, he explained , it is lethal. All these years , I have had my eyes on lookout for a similar , beautiful broach for my hair as well. I had to draw an image of it.

Nice touches, Sharon. I'll try to round-up my photos of a piebald raven in Alaska. Not nearly as white as your bird, however.
Where's Tray?

Sharon, ravens are probably one of my favorite birds. We have them at higher elevations here in WNC. While deer hunting they always capture my attention with their acrobatic flights, various sounds, and most always flying in pairs. Even on the foggiest of mornings you can hear them swooshing in the air right over your head. Seems they are about twice the size of a common crow and twice as interesting.

Scout1, I have heard of a couple folks who had ravens fly with them in hunts, and on their own, figured out what the guy was after. They then would find deer or elk, fly back to the guy and excitedly get them to follow them right to the game.

What nice photos, everyone. There are Pine Grosbeaks here too. Don't see them often. Redpolls and Siskens always visit. Of them all, I really like Siskens. Plain, small, drab toned birds, they are quite tame, but they are the only ones that sing year round, that I've known. Even in the roughest winters, they sit near the feeder and sing softly. They sing loudest in spring, though regardless, sing softly year round. Also, individuals have different cadence in songs. They even will mimic other bird song and incorporate those sound bites into their medley . You have to listen carefully, as they speed along in the song, but will repeat it . Interesting wee birdies, among my favorite.

Jack, Tray must be on walkabout ...

We've had these little birds for the past month hitting the suet. I've never seen them around here before. After consulting my Audubon book, I'm thinking they are Warblers nicknamed Yellow Bellies. They love the suet cakes I put out. Anybody familiar with them?

Some really nice pix on here.
I don't take many pix but I will recommend a book.

African Genesis by Robert Ardrey.

Ardrey was a playwright by occupation but a zoologist by education. Consequently his books read easily and are delightfully interesting and educational.

In African Genesis he is investigating anthropological antiquities in Africa and using information about birds as a vehicle to discuss the development of man. He uses examples about the color and behavior of birds as well as habits and learned, as well as innate, knowledge in some species.

I found it very interesting .

It is out of print but any used bookstore is likely to have a copy...........libraries too.
