The cost of living is $20 average on green beaver really good? No it’s not. You are losing money.

Is there some reason you cant fur trap and trap nuisance also where you live? I do both, fur in season and nuisance out of season. Make money doing both.Higher return or nuisance but also higher expense.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Don't hold your breath. Look what happened to the coyote market in just one season. That's true, most market's go down faster than they go up. But look at the 10-12 run we had with coyotes, western heavies averaging over $100 some years. Beaver today are in the thirties, and could be headed up a good way from that.

It's already running out of steam in these parts as the carcass buyers have lowered their prices. I doubt it is due to any real market adjustment, but they are getting swamped with carcass beaver. Traps at every road crossing around here. Maybe it is because it is nearing the end of the season and they are starting to get bit up? Bit up has nothing to do with it for the hatter market, except for the mid winter high quality shearing goods, and at $48-$60 at FHA they still aren't quite high enough to get trappers in the north to chop holes through ice and produce numbers. If buyers are getting overloaded with carcass beaver it may mean they have difficulty putting them up before they begin to spoil. OR, they are lowering the price because they can, good capitalists!

The top end is still garment market. Those skins will see a nice spike in the near future I bet. If we can jump FHA's blanket basis from $48-$60 today and next year see $80 USD select blankets again I think we'll see under ice beaver trappers again. I'm optimistic and kind of enthused.

The cost of living is $20 average on green beaver really good? No it’s not. You are losing money. I did 142 in a week, consisting of about 45 hours worth of work on the side while working full time. A buddy of mine will get near 500 while working full time. Money is being made for the first time in a long time on Minnesota traplines.

How far down is the harvest from 1980 levels? In 1980 I was working at HBC Montreal and buyers like Ben Kahn, Revillon, and Scheflin-Reich along with brokers like Sam Levin were buying big. Hudson's Bay that year sold 1,237,000 beaver pelts through the auction and private treaty. That didn't include Canadian brokers like Murray Lippman, among many others. I don't know what Ontario Trappers sold then but it was a LOT more than today. I'd guess 1980 beaver pelt sales at 2.5-3 million pelts. FHA this year along with Groenewold and assorted buyers may be 7 - 8% of 1980's take, assuming Groeny buys and sells as much as FHA. I'm an optimist for the next 3-5 years, then fashion may change.
