Observation hives are cool but are display pieces as they are to small for long term survival of the colony.

I own two of them.

One of my club members had one of their's set up at our club picnic today. Had a good turnout and I got to do one of the things I enjoy the most. Taking a small group of new beekeepers into the beeyard and tear down a hive for a full inspection and q&a session. Showed them how to mark a queen, several queen cells and how to ID eggs and royal jelly. Did all of this bare handed with only a veil.

Got a picnic next weekend for my other club.

But what I enjoyed most was visiting with a couple of our oldest members in their late eighties. It's bittersweet seeing age taking away the abilities to do what they love the most but I value time with them nonetheless.

And I got to suit up two of my grandbabies for their first trip to the beeyard.

A guy gave me a brand new one, it sits in my bee shed. Not very practical….good for taking bees for a display at a County Fair or Farm Show.

We have one here at a well known public Apple orchard. Maybe not the best , but keeps the public involved.

Overall , it is a good thing.

Yup, mainly a display tool. I do quite a few events and public speaking. I especially like the school events. Kids will keep you on your toes with the most off the wall questions.

One thing I've come to realize late in life is that I now understand what my mother, grandparents and a dozen or so other family members enjoyed so much about teaching.

Wish I lived closer to you Warrior. Would love to sit in one of your classes like that. I could even get stung a few times on my hands and see if it really helps arthritis like I’ve heard it does!

I once met a man that puts hives in the windows of school classrooms.

No you don't, I have a tendency to try to pack a lifetime's worth of learning into an eight hour class. It can't be done. LOL

My Meet the Honey Bee intro talk spans from the Cretaceous fossil record to present and includes both the biological history of bees and the historical record of man's interaction with bees. It's a 45 minute talk to start an eight hour day of class.
The opening slide has a sign that says, I'm a beekeeper, if you see me running try to keep up.

I just hope to light a fire for learning.

And bee venom definitely helps, natural cortisone.

I usually end up with a hive of bees on my side porch. Usually a swarm I’ve caught. The grandkids can sit on the back of the couch and watch them come and go, about 5-6 feet away.

Me and the 4yo granddaughter were sitting out watching my front yard swarm catch. She think they are adorable.

Had a stack of empties and I noticed scouts but ignored it thinking just scouts. Until it wasn't just scouts, lol. When I tried lifting the lid I knew it. They had built down two mediums so I just shifted the mess onto a deep of drawn comb and I'll wait until she's moved down then slide in an excluder and harvest the top.

I really like messing with my bee hives - but not today. One stung me in the eyelid. I have been stung hundreds of times - but none like this one. Supposed to scrape the stinger out, and not pull it with tweezers so you dont squeeze more venom out of the venom sac. This one was imbedding in the skin of my eyelid and had to pull it with tweezers.

Ouch

Don't matter how tough your hands and arms get a hit on soft tissue of the face is going to hurt and swell.

That's why more often than not I at least put on the veil.

I usually wear a veil, too. Was just taking a couple nucs out of the back of the truck to set out. Was a few bees flying around one of them and one of those bees made a beeline straight to me. It HURT!

Yup, those I'm just going to do this quick little thing jobs are when the kamikazes come out, lol.

Did a full tear down show and tell on a double deep at the picnic yesterday and swear those were the calmest bees. Even the one that got inside my veil didn't offer to sting.

Just got these photos from yesterday.

A good crowd of folks

Always good for a few laughs, our smoker lighting contest. Three matches, pine straw, five minutes to light and pack. Last one smoking wins fifty bucks.

My latest little beekeepers. Grand daughters number 4 and 5 ages 7 and 4. They have a little brother I'll be suiting up in a year or so.

And your's truly in the center in wearing only a veil.

Wow whitecliffs that makes me rethink all the times I work the bees in shorts and a t shirt. I often only wear a Vaillancourt during the Darth. Sometimes I regret it and face stings are the worse for swelling, pain was worse on the top of my foot sting. Hobbled around for 3 days . But the one you got is so deep and the worse I have ever seen. I wouldn't have taken time to take a picture. I can't imagine how bad that swelled.

I once had an ant get in my eye and bite before he died. I didn't know he bit but i couldn't get it to come out of my eye it would move each direction but not come out. Eventually I grabbed it with tweezers and that took some eye tissue with it. Thats when I found out it was an ant and had bit into my eye. I thought it was a pice of bark initially. It was to the point I was going to go to an eye Dr to get whatever it was removed but I didn't know where one was close by since we had just moved to the farm. So I decided to grab it with the tweezers. Not very smart but luckily my eye was not damaged.

Hmm, I have a few hives I would like to see someone work without a jacket on. Every time I pop the top I am met with about 1000 angry greeters........they are just plain irritated and let you know it.....think I need to pinch off some queens. Run about 35 hives currently and I have 2 that I feel like kicking over every time I work them. Without fail I will have at least 100 bees on me each time I am finished working those 2 hives. I prefer the big fat Italians as they have a much better demeanor. We are so dry around here the flow does not look promising.
