Imm be 100% with you. If you don't have alot of experience with them or have a lot of patience just avoid spring piston air rifles. Aka the crack barrel ,sidel lever or under leaver ones like gamo . They can be as accurate as anything else but they require some finesse on how you hold them. If your willing to shoot and practice alot there's a lot of good ones though I'd stay away from the one that shoot super fast. I.e the 1000-1300fps ones. They shoot just too fast and makes the pellets unstable and inaccurate. 900fps and below is a good place.

what range do you need ?

is this pick them off the rafters in the barn or high in a tree?

all around good for small game and such
https://www.pyramydair.com/product/benjamin-variable-pump-air-rifle-black?m=4869

this is the current revision of the Sheridan Blue Streak or at least the blue streak was good for all around small game

I have a air arms s510 that is amazingly accurate and extremely quiet, downside is it was really expensive. I also have a Benjamin marauder it is much cheaper and pretty accurate downside is it is kinda noisy. The air arms is 25cal the Benjamin is 22. I would agree to not get the spring piston type I had several and none were accurate.

I bought a Beeman break-barrel 20 years ago to control an invasion of chipmunks around the property. I cant say Ive experienced the accuracy problems that Wolfie mentioned. If you aim at it, you hit it...period. dont remember how much I paid. It is a 177 cal. 1000 fps which has been more than adequate for squirrel size critters. No neighbors at our new property, I often just grab the Hmr....its funner:)

I have the Gamo shotgun/22 pellet air rifle. Works good. Affordable. Mostly using the mini shotshells. Takes out pigeon sized targets with ease.

As someone whos gone down this road I would say from my personal experience .22 Colbri is superior to most air rifles and just as quiet. The PCP airguns are neat, a fun toy but they're expensive and pumping them up is a pain.

the thing about spring guns is they recoil forward not backwards like everything else

because the spring is compressed then jumps they have a weird recoil pulse forward causing some people to not shoot them well

the hold Wolfie is talking about is called Artillery hold , I have no idea who named it that it is letting the gun basically jump free it is supported but not pulled into your shoulder like you would any other rifle.

accuracy is also subjective a dime size group at 10 meters is accurate to some , but the X on an air rifle 10 meter target is a dot smaller than the 0.177 pellet you have to take out the dot to score.

I have a gas piston 22 cal. Its a Benjamin Varmint. The Nitro/Gas pistons are a step up from a springer, even though they are a break barrel. If I miss a sparrow at 25-30 yards it was me, not the gun. I like it. I had to do a trigger job on it when I got it. To do a trigger job I put a RC car wheel bearing over a stud, that dropped trigger down to I would guess about three pounds. But it shoots well.

A pcp in .22 cal is a great budget option.

If it makes a track on this earth , I can catch it.

I'll be odd man out. Beeman R7 or Weihrach HW 30 (same gun). Mine has a 2 x 7 Hawke Airmax scope. It is one of my starling killers. A dime will cover 10 shots at 30 feet, so with starlings, aim at their eye and you will be close enough......if they will hold still long enough. Springers and as such are single shots, but do not require any other hardware like air tanks, pumps, etc. Just (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) and shoot.

Did require a one piece Beeman mount to keep scope from moving, but once I got that sorted, no issues since. A precision plinker.

Could not give me a Gamo or similar. No use for one of those at all.

RWS Diana
Break Barrel Model #40
.17 cal
Took a few samples to find the ammo it likes.
Winchester air rifle scope .
Shoots 3 inside a dime at 20yds.
Sparrows are my target.
Bopping them in the Burbs.
If i ever get another , It will be a Break Barrel with Gas piston.
Just to see the difference.

I have had the same crossman 2100 for a long time, my dad bought it sometime in the 70s, I have had to replace the check valve and O rings a couple times over the years as well as a few other parts but it’s still up to the job dad bought it for and that’s killing sparrows around the house and in a pinch will easily put paid to a marauding tree rat or scrub pigeon or occasional rabbit

Mine is very accurate with pellets not so much with BBs

Benjamin Marauder .22 with Hawke Scope 6-25x50
I use at my work.
Head shots on ground squirrels out to 65 yards...too easy under 50.
Must use the correct pellet though...very picky.
Mine like the JB Barracudas..I forget the weight.
