The earlier M93 Spanish Mauser was the reason our govt. Adopted the 03 Springfield. It was cutting edge for the time.

I am about to sound old and I promise I am not judging, but if you mention layaway and a 300 dollar gun in the same sentence , you should go save up 5K so you don't live life not able to hop on the real deals that show up.

3K in an envelope secured some place in your house for those deals that come up

3 months pay in the bank/credit union

a boat to take your honey fishing in eventually

you have a decent job now , get the savings in order , you will never be sad you have some cash in the bank to take the worried out of thinks like broken cars.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Those were German made for the Spanish. Spanish steel from the early 20th was questionable.

Warrior, you are correct. The first years were made in Germany and then the Spanish at Oviedo took over. The question of steel quality is hotly debated amongst collectors. Many of the old M 93s were converted to the 7.62x51 cartridge. Even this is debated as to whether it was a lower pressure loading or the NATO round or not.
My only sample of a soft receiver was a large ring 98 like mentioned above. This is from owning and shooting some two dozen Mausers or several nationalities. I prefer the Swedes as the best of the lot.

Heck, all nations had issues with the hardening learning curve. A big chunk of our Springfields had brittle receivers.

But those that stuck with the older piece work cottage type manufacture seemed to have it worse not being able to standardize under one roof.

I'm not a metallurgist but the turn of the last century is quite interesting in development of steel. Not just small arms, naval armor was a huge area of research.

been a LOT of custom rifles built on rebarreled mauser actions. look at winchester model 70 and ruger 77 mark ii. mauser copies. find a cut down rifle with a wore out bore it might be worth buying to build a new rifle with.

Fastest shooting bolt action.Better shooter.Plus 303 br is a great accurate mid range round with a lot more punch than say a 30.30 or a 7'62.
Killed lots of bears with the 303 from pretty good range.
Many moose have been downed with the 303 br.

More punch than a 7.62 what?
7.62x39 Yes
7.62x54 No
7.62x63 (30 06) No
7.62X51 (.308) No

Yes it's fast. Fastest bolt rifle of WWl. Also, the British and Canadians used it to good effect in the Boer War against the Dutch farmers.

Had a 8mm mauser years ago it was a good gun and not nearly as nice ; by the way young man spend your money the way you see fit you earned it not anyone else on this site and learn from your good fortune and your mistakes that's what makes a good life in my opinion

I sold one just about like this last Fall. I put $225 on it and struggled to sell it.

I have nothing clever to put here.
