Low fur prices always bring on the PT debate. Never fails.
I wish Wissmiss would throw her 2 cents in. She seems to have an impartial view on such things as both a buyer and sympathy for the trapper. Plus decades of experience in the fur trade.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

I know for a fact that not all PT sales are someone calling or looking for something. It is a good way to clean the floor. I know they call big buyers and say they will sell them all the xxx for $$$ at times. Often they are speculators and the fur is never shipped or is shipped back when the market goes up. If someone is looking for an item you may do alright on a PT sale, but if the auction house is cleaning the floor odds of a market price are not great.

Can someone explain this to me and is it beneficial to the trapper or do we even have a say in how it's sold?
The minute your fur goes on the truck you 've lost any say in when or however your fur is sold. You roll the dice and take your chances.

All fur sold outside of an open auction is sold private treaty; but the situations can be mildly to significantly dfferent. When I ship fur I am giving the auction house staff the responsibility to represent my assets to the best of their ability. That can be concerning, but I can deal with it. Just like I deal with the capital gains distribution tax when the fund manager of a managed fund buys and sells stocks within my fund. I have given them the responsibilty to manage funds on my behalf. Having and using multiple ways to sell fur and or invest in retirement are for me ways to diversify.

My apologies if I created a domestic dispute between some. I googled private treaty and all I could find was real estate deals. The reason I'm asking is I thought I sent good fur to the sale and kept the junk. I've got a lynx at the sale that for whatever reason wasn't sold and says "ungraded". Curious if it got sold privately. Lol, I was wondering the same thing but waiting for someone else to ask. I sent everything to this auction. Not much of a market where I live. I think Bewick makes his rounds in Ontario but no info on southern Mb. While watching the auction, you can tell there’s bidders from all over the world, 1 from Russia, and they couldn’t keep up with the sales and what was going on.

In the old days I believe this was how private treaty worked for species that had some action in the auction room. A buyer had to pay at least 10 percent more than comparably graded fur sold in the Auction room if they waited to buy private treaty. This way they bid in the Auction room and didn't try to wait to get stuff later cheaper private treaty. If the Auction sells fur private treaty for a similar price to what it sold for in the auction room it benefits the trapper by selling his fur earlier than the next auction. In my case fur not sold in Feb/March almost always sold for at least 10 percent less in May/June. However, FHA makes more money on fees than commission on many species and has no real incentive to hold out for more money on commissions when most of the money comes from fees. Lately Auctions have been more likely to dump nonmoving fur for pitiful prices PT and I believe they no longer follow the 10 percent higher than the Auction room price policy.

I think that's how NAFA handled Pt sales.

If an auction sells to a furbuyer ( a person who buys raw fur in bulk and sells raw fur in bulk, doing no value added work to the product) it is a pretty good indicator they are not getting market value. IMHO.

And vice versa with all the private buyers who buy from trappers and sell at the auction.

I would comment on this thread but I’m too old to get into another peeing match with JP and his buddies.
Remember that his profile JP's says he is an entertainer.
