Haven't you ever seen what happens to a penny or even a quarter placed on the railroad tracks?

I have plenty of those “coins” as well.

I had not noticed the ties “sponging” up and down like that before though. lol

As a kid we only did pennies. Couldn’t afford quarters. Plus the gouvernment wasn’t handling them out.

They are designed to work that way.

Seen that before,

I was fishing one day where the tracks were beside the river. I kept hearing a clacking sound so I watched closer.

One of those tie bar musta been really lose because the track would pop up a couple inches until the next wheel hit it. I pulled anchor and moved! lol

I would think there would have to be some give. But how much is too much?

That's common at least here. We load 120k lb in each car so that plus the weight of the car. Cars going to Mexico get loaded lighter becuse their bridges and tracks can't Handel as much weight.

Somewhere I have a silver coin that was flattened when the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was moved about 1/4 mile back from the surf. It was cribbed up and put on rail trucks. Hydraulic rams moved it a few feet at a time down the rail. It is the tallest lighthouse in America. You can still climb it too.

My cousins husband was the mover.

I have an Indian Head penny dated 1895 with one edge mashed from a train! Found it at a local lake while fishing.

I got a question. Why is there a ground wire bonding the 2 rails together? They are steel. Plus a steel plate on back side bolting them together

It's a circuit to activate the crossing signal. The train completes the circuit between the rails.

I tamped many a rail tie and spiked my fair share of ties and plates when I worked on a track gang for a couple years on summer break from school. Some of us got some bad creosote burns when unloading fresh treated ties. We had to wear long sleeve flannel shirts on 90-degree days to reduce the fume exposure to our skin. Our gang laid some of the first continuous rail in SW Pa back in the early 70's.

I would like to see how many snowflakes could handle one day on a track crew like that today.
