Excellent advice. There’s basically a very well built log home with a nice kitchen, bath, bed, another bath, pantry and mud room. That part is very nicely preserved. Then there’s a 24x64 or so portion that was just put together by a. Inch of church guys to make sort of a gathering hall. It’s nice but it’s rotted. Badly. That’s going to need to come down. I’m building it back with regular framing. I really just need to know how to maintain the other part that will still be standing. Fantastic comments. Thank you, guys.

How about the annual big treatment? Is there a product that also seals the logs annually while keeping bugs out at the same time?

Yes, there are paint/stain additives for bugs, basically permethrin. There are additives for mildew available as well.

X2 for Schroeder Log Home Supply. I've had a log home for 23 years and it was 25 years old when I bought it. It's always been maintained with products from Schroeder and it still looks fantastic. I was a bit intimidated at first about the prospect of so much maintenance/bugs/rot/etc., but it really hasn't been bad at all. Use good products and recoat with stain at regular intervals (I try to stain one exterior wall each year, with the southern-facing wall getting extra attention) and it will last a long time and look great.

Schroeder is actually located in my town and the owners are great people. Very helpful and community-oriented.

I build little cabins with local lodgepole pine logs.In Idaho and Alaska, no problems with bugs. I use CWF (Clear Wood Finish) which is a Flood product. Has a UV blocker. Also, I recommend Permachink, as have the guys above.

Another vote for CWF Flood products.

I have built and lived in log homes for the last 50 years. Never had an issue with bugs, bats, rot etc. The trick with log buildings is the be sure the roof overhang is large enough to keep the building dry,.......especially the corners.

Definitely need to continue treating south and west facing sides as time goes on.

Stay far away from Sikkens products! Had to have our house blasted to remove that junk! Gets kinda expensive.
