I've got a Weatherby vanguard which is made by Howa and is suppose to be very similar to the Howa. 7 rem mag. It's a series 1 so not the newest generation. Really like the action and trigger. Stock was cheap ( think the series 2 may be a touch better). Threaded barrel which came with a muzzle brake. After bedding the action and free floating the barrel I'll get 5/8 to 3/4 groups with factory ammo. I believe it's a bit lighter gun than the Bergaras. When I got it it was a toss up between the Bergara and it, but I like stainless for went with vanguard. Think the Bergaras have better stocks and being a rem 700 clone are a bit easier to customize. I've heard good things on the CVAs too. Owned by Bergara with Bergara barrels and 3 lug actions and a bit cheaper. Little food for thought. What caliber you looking at? I've been looking hard at the new 6.5 and 7mm prcs for the faster twist and tighter tolerance chambers for a factory gun.

Back fire on YouTube does a lot of comparisons on cheaper and mid grade guns, might be worth watching

But any who probably just a .308 . Kinda just want a "good" rifle that just "works " in a "established and proven" caliber. Kinda of those things where I just have it in th back ground you know

Regardless of what you decide, keep Bergara in mind if you decide to rebarrel something.

About 4-5 years ago I was looking for a new, lighter bolt action rifle and the final two were a Bergara B-14 or a Weatherby (Howa) Back Country model. I eventually chose the Weatherby Back Country because it was lighter. The Bergara felt good to me, just heavier. Very subjective and it varies with everyone. Bergara is made in Spain and Howa is made in Japan. I'm happy with my 6.75 lb, 24" fluted barrel, McMillan stock, short action rifle.

Looking last year at begara, wby vanguard, howa and tikka. All priced similarly - I went with Tikka and have zero regrets. I have heard if you want to modify and put a bunch of extras on etc the bergaras are easier. I just could not get over the buttery smooth action of tikka. We went stainless extralite but you may not if you get a larger caliber - we wanted another .243.

I have a Howa 270 that I bought in 2000 zero problems. It is my go to deer and bear rifle. Eric
