TreedaBlackdog if he wants to try reconciliation with his wife that's fine, but from a Biblical aspect, cheating is the only condition that Jesus said was an acceptable reason for divorce. Matthew 5:31-32
Not many people live their lives according to Jesus' Sermon on the Mount teachings. Which of course includes marriage in the Christian sense outlined in the Bible.
Which in the text you mention (Matt 5:31-32), has our Lord quoting from the Law given to Moses (Deuteronomy 24:1) and then teaching that if the husband "sends away" the wife, for any reason other than "porneia" (sexual immorality), the husband is causing the wife to commit adultery (forcing her unwarranted remarriage).
Likewise, if the wife divorces (sends away) the husband and marries another, she commits adultery unless her marriage bond has been broken by immorality (Mark 10:12).
God's ideal is that the wife should never depart from the husband. If she does, however, she should remain unmarried or be reconciled to the husband. Likewise, the husband should not divorce or send away the wife (Jesus' teachings and 1 Corinthians 7:10-11).
Jijjamitch, many of us have tasted the defeat of divorce and for some of us, me included, made dramatic life changing choices during that time. I was not a believer years ago when my wife (not a believer either) and I divorced. I was taking advice from all the wrong people too, now that I look back on that tragic era. Life will go on, and I hope you steer towards the betterment of your heart in all this. It won't be easy because it was never meant to be easy. It'll probably be the crappiest thing you ever go through. So seek wisdom from the best sources and perhaps if your heart is open to it.... seek God's answers in all this too. That'd be done in prayer. Depending on the day, you may be depressed or angry or something else entirely. God can take it.
Mother Theresa was asked towards the end of her wonderful life of ministry and servanthood to others, what she prayed to God day after day, year after year about.
Her answer.... "I mainly listen."
Blessings,
Mark
