From the website Wildlife Informer. Some figures may be controversial but still
Interesting. Moose populations are located in 19 states with a total estimated population in the U.S. 275,000 - 315,000. Canada is estimated between 500,000 -1,000,000.
Alaska 175,000 - 200,000
Colorado- 3,000
Connecticut - 100
Idaho - 10,000 - 12,000
Maine - 60,000 - 70,000
Massachusetts - 1,000 - 1,500
Michigan - 500
Minnesota - 4,700
Montana - 2,300 - 4675
New Hampshire - 3,300
Nevada - up to 500
New York - 600 - 700
North Dakota - 500 minimum
Oregon - 50
Utah - 2,500 - 3000
Vermont - 3,000
Washington - 500
Wisconsin - 20 - 40
Wyoming - 3,500

Remainder States none to rare sightings.

This may be completely untrue, but when I was in Vermont this spring the local guys claimed that the skyrocketing tick population was causing a decline in the moose population. Not sure if that is factual. We put 1000 miles on the truck in all different types of terrain in northern Vermont and didn't see the first moose.

Gotta live up to the nickname...

Well I feel special now! Saw two different moose in two different areas in Washington last month while chasing turkeys! 2 out of an estimated 500!!
Even got to video one!!

We have a Moose Lodge down the road from the house. Does that count. Some nights those Moose really liven things up.

God please keep they 19 fallen UBB miners out of trouble up there.

There are way more than 600-700 moose in NY. A decade ago the NYDEC said there were over 1000, so where did they go ? Everywhere I go fishing in the Adirondack Wilderness areas, I see more moose tracks than deer tracks.

MN did a study because of their dwindling moose population and found the same thing to be the case.

We used to have quite a few around here before they introduced the wolves. Now we pretty much have none.

It's not politically correct for the DNR to say wolves have any effect on the moose population. Don't want to upset the Howling For Wolves people.

Intersting that WI has many fewer moose then MI or MN in contrast that we have far more black bear. WI has a lot of wetlands in the north so I would have thought more population, but then no border with Canada either.
We are further south also so the tick numbers could be an impactor.

I'm pretty comfortable in saying that in Alabama we have zero Moose. But, we have enough Armadillos for everybody.

Id be mighty surprised if there wasnt. They are in the UP from one end to the other, I certainly doubt they stop to read state line signs when they come to one...

It seems that all the studies point to Ticks and climate change for the dwindling Moose population in Mn. I have over 15 years of game cameras located on my 40 acres 35 miles north of Duluth, Mn. My observations are that when I see wolves weekly almost year around and I see a calf with a cow moose in June and by September that calf is nowhere to be found, that wolf depredation is more responsible for the decline of Moose populations than ticks. It is possible that ticks contribute to stress on Moose, but if there are not enough moose calves to survive to maturity and reproduce then the overall population numbers will drop.
