I was going to leave Hilton Head Island for home last Sunday but a guy with a 45 Tiara sport fish limped in with a cracked exhaust and water getting into the boat through it and a lot of smoke in the engine room etc. He and his 3 kids were on their way to Connecticut and needed the thing fixed. Everyone he got in touch with told him 5 to 7 weeks. I told him that I could do it in 3 days but would have to take it home to TN to fix it and bring it back and instal it. I was hoping that he would decline but I got the job. So Monday I took the exhaust elbow out. Put it in my truck and drove home. Got home at midnight welded the exhaust up on Tuesday , put it back in the truck and drove back down … Wednesday I put the exhaust in, fixed an issue he had with his bow thruster and drove back home. Got into some weather on that trip and decided to get new tires for the truck as it was getting a bit scratchy in the rain. So ordered them over the phone on the way and am now sitting at the local tire shop and having them put on …… so a good chunk of the money I made in those 3 .days is now being put on the truck. Benjamin Franklin Goodrich made out well in this deal lol

Cast iron Scuba?

I had a truck come in the shop with a broken exhaust manifold once, and I heard of a local that spray welded cast so I took it to him. I watched him repair it and was skeptical of it holding, but the truck still comes in several years later and its holding!

Have you ever done this type welding? Looked easy.....just need the stuff.

Last cast iron I " welded" was a Crack in an exhaust manifold on my 67 Camaro, 45 years ago, lol.
Oxy- acetylene and an.old wire coat hanger.

Seemed to work, but put headers on it a couple months later.

I got lucky last year, grabbed 4 Cooper 265/70/17 E Range when Wslmart was clearancing them out, think.they were $129 a pop.

Got 70-80K on first 2 sets of BFGs on my diesel.
Lrss than half that with General Grabbers.

We'll see how the Coopers do

This one was made out of Stainless steel and I TIG welded the thing and made a couple of patches where it had gotten thin in the water injection area. I have spray welded shafts in the past to make new bearing seats. But that was with company gear back in the day. We had a setup for that in the machine shop.

The tires I got are BFG KO2 All terrain in 37 12.50 R 20 and were a bit more than $129 each.... Ya think I got ripped off ?? They are a LOT less noisy than the Ironman All country that were on there when I got the truck. And nowhere near as squirrel in the wet today.

I'll see how they last I guess. But at least on the way home just now I was a happy camper.

Hippie. I have had good results TIG brazing cast iron. but have also welded it with stainless steel rods stick welding it and used TIG and filler rods. I like to pre heat the parts before welding them. I BBQ seances up all the way with the lid shut works well for things like manifolds and such..... Pre heat the part, weld it and then cool it of gradually to not build up any stress while cooing it off works pretty good.

They were $ 2440.00 including balancing the 10% for the big guy etc. But now I can actually listen to the radio at speeds above 15 Mph and the mpg went to a more positive side as well. I guess all that noise theaters made costs fuel. I do a fair few highway miles and do a good bit of towing heavy things. So some good black round things are not optional IMHO. In the long run I think these will work out cheaper than some others that may be less at the initial purchase but quit after 30 000 miles or less like the last set. Tie will tell I guess.

I never "tig brazed" or heard of it.

Do you use a flux coated brazing rod ?

No flux as you have the shielding gas preventing oxidation. If you are not fixing something like an exhaust manifold, Aluminum bronze works pretty good .... Silica bronze for things that get somewhat warmer.

That's about what I paid for a tractor tire last year.
It ALMOST made 30 years, no idea on the mileage though, lol

You need the best , Michael. As you mentioned, and is the case for many things, cheaper stuff can wear out or break, or just flat not work well, costing you more than getting the best to start with.

A smooth quiet ride in your VECHILE, to boot wink

In the last few weeks i looked at a bunch of tires for my truck and narrowed it down to 3. They are all around the same price range. So after " skating " home from SC I swung by the local tire shop and out of the ones I narrowed it down to the BF Goodrich KO2 is what they could get their hands on in short order. So I ordered them there and then and had them mounted a couple of days later. I do to many miles a month to be running around on iffy tires.
