Boco, you metioned in another post that you were one of the trappers testing cable restraints, which led to their legalization in Ontario. I had a great interest in this outcome, because I was the one who made those used in the testing.A lot of the thanks must go to Mary Garvey, who was the bioligist for the Ministry of Natural Resources.(Hard to believe it was12 years ago). Mary kept me informed on how the testing was going,so I was thrilled when your part of Ontario were able to again use a type of snare,no matter what they are named. On a side note, your PM box is full. Tom

I don't want to speak for Boco, but regular snares have always been legal where he's at as far as I know. It is the snare free zones below the French/Mattawa river line that needed the Cars added to the regs.
I haven't had much opportunity to use them yet but I'm happy to have the option and appreciate everyone who worked to get them written in to the regs.
Just happy to be here.

I was on the BOD of the OFMF at that time representing North eastern Ontario. A lot of the Northern trappers did not want us testing the live snares because they were afraid lethal snares would be outlawed in the north and we would be required to use only the live holding snares which unless you were in the far north would mean checking snares every day. I myself and the director from NW ontario told the federation and the MNR that we would kill it right off the bat if we did not get guarantees from The minister and the beurocrats that lethal snaring would not be affected in any way in the north, and the current regs would stand. We got support in this from the directors from southern Ontario where the live hold snares would be allowed if the testing was favourable, which it was. We got those guarantees and live holding snare testing went ahead. And implemented for use in the southern part of the province.

The more I read about Ontarios trapping set up, the better it sounds. Looks like a good system there. Starting way back when OFMF was born, the gov worked well with them…….Which is strange, usually a new politician or 2 will get in and wreck everything.

It seems to have at least worked out for you in this instance at least so far.

Our trapping organization works very closely with Govt every day.Trappers have had a great working relationship with the govt since the early days when registered traplline system was implemented back in the 40's.Shortly afterwards the govt helped establish the trapper owned and run OTA fur sales in North Bay which today is known as FHA, OFMF administers the provincial fur program under contract,do all data input into FURMIS,and we deliver the trappers education course to the trappers of Ontario. For the record,we have made major strides to advance trapping here with both Liberal and Conservative governments. For example, the exmayor of North Bay,Vic Fedeli, who is a great friend of trappers and often was a guest speaker at our Trappers convention,is currently a high level cabinet minister in Doug Fords Conservative Provincial Government. There are a lot in Government here who are real friends of trappers because they know our role and what we do. We have also had, over the years general managers who were well connected politically. The main thing politicians pay attention to is numbers.Numbers mean weight when you are at the table.Trappers need to be well organized and the organization has to have concrete support from who they represent. The OFMF enjoys around 80% membership of the Trappers of Ontario. No politician is going to take any organization seriously that only has 20 or 30 percent membership.

Boco is correct. Going back to the late '70's I have long been an admirer of the Ontario system of furbearer management including the logical offshoot which is now FHA. Tried to introduce for years, along with a handful of others, that sort of system here and Newfoundland. We got beaten out by the hobbyists along with their pals in government.

No politician is going to take any organization seriously that only has 20 or 30 percent membership. That’s Manitobas problem.
