One thing I know is a fact. Whether you use any method to train be it Lyons Monte or Hunt or others the only way to get a Horse BROKE and I mean really Broke and Trained is Hours in the Saddle and Miles under his Hooves!!! The Lyons and others just prove what I have always been told and learned and that is to first get the Horses Trust before getting in the Saddle. Lunging is nothing more than a warm up. I don't lung my horse before an endurance run but then he is in the Pasture all the time. He goes into his stall in the evening when feeding time rolls around and let back out in the Morning after his feeding.

Big difference between training and breaking. Usually breaking as described above will break the spirit too

That's why I cringe at the word break. Break, by definition , means to ruin, to break something from operating.

Now Randall, you know better ....it isn't because their feet "go a mile a minute and go nowhere", that the lions share of endurance winners are exactly Arabs and Arab mixes. Is your "old friend" one of those good ol boys who also pronounce them as " A-rabs", too ? smile I grew up dealing with those types ...

If you've ever seen Spanish Arabs, for example, you'd be hard-pressed to even identify what they are. Even at vet checks in endurance runs, the vets mistake them for Quarter crosses. They're not. Vinny was among the best horses I've ever ridden, and I've ridden my good share in all types, crosses, ponies, drafts, and mules .

Good handling and lots of miles is what makes hot , warm and cold bloods good.

Not a few true cowboys, in moments of lucidity, admit that Arabians improve and refine every breed invented . They say this, because even America's own claim to fame , in the Quarter horse industry, goes way back to Arabs.

For me, I like all breeds. They all have a place. I like them all.

Regardless of breed, or cross, I like Pat Pirelli's saying...." work with the horse that shows up..." good mindset to keep in mind day by day.

Almost as many horse owners need training as horses that need training.

Clients ride horses following the dogs. Very few could keep up on foot and I’ve only seen 2 hunts where they rode the Jeep only. Horses add to the experience.

Lol seeing those pictures of hunters on horse back reminds me of 1 client I took in that asked if they could shoot off the horses back? I replied "Yes once but don't expect to get a follow up

MY 2cents worth is most horses are good and the original owner " trainer" needed some work when you get one that is less than favorable. When working as packer/wrangler/guide I usually got the 2 to 3 yr olds for a summer then they went to a girl scout camp because they were "Bomb Proof", could hang plastic bags with aluminum cans on them and no big deal

Sharon I thought you didn't like mustangs? I think it s the build? After looking at a bunch with short necks and odd proportions I was going to agree if so. Then I saw some really nice looking ones. I believe it depends on which herd they come from and their foundation background. A lot are also short but some herds have more highth and color.

PF, I don't care for the build I see in many of them. That said, there are builds in full breeds that I don't care for either. Those are individuals , for me.

You're right, on the herd breeding. That's in any of them, purebred types or feral mustangs. I've seen some nice proportioned feral herds too.

This seems to go also for any animals, dogs, cats, etc. Breeders can go through bad times with a certain line, that isn't liked by buyers, so they choose another breeder , and/or that defective line gets filtered out in time.

I was trying to say, I like individuals in all breeds. I have tried to keep an open mind on them all, and not get stuck on just one or two.

Honestly I think a well broke mule may be the best for me.always thought they were ugly but they have been growing on me. I don't need to go fast only want sure footed and not flighty for trail riding. Would be nice to be able to shoot from it's back. Hunting would be a lot of fun off horse or mule that way. Being not an established and skilled horseman. I tend to just plop in the saddle and go.

Someday I will have the time and get new fence put up.
