Mark -
Neat looking artifact. Without having it in hand, I can't say for certain, but some of the angles look to me like domestic dog, Canis domesticus. However, as you well know, there's lots of overlap with gray wolves, Canis lupus. Whatever it was, it obviously led a fairly long life. Cool skull! The holes in the frontals in the second photo looks suspiciously like Skrjabingylus (brain worm), but I've never encountered it in canines.
I'd agree with foxkid in that the sagittal crest is a bit underdeveloped for a wolf considering how old an animal it appears to be from the dentition.

I figure it is K-9 of some sort. Look at the width of the k-9 teeth. A friend of mine dug it up. I told him to measure it and send me the dimensions.

I say dog. I have the skull of a young wolf on hand. It is 10 1/2 inches long,4 1/2 inches high with a very pronounced saggital crest.

Mark - These may help. 7-yr-old from Idaho. They are ones I did a couple years ago. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2023/07/full-10376-182852-wolf_1_2014_005_xx.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2023/07/full-10376-182853-wolf_2_2014_005_xx.jpg) In the top drawing, note the sagittal crest that goes over the back of the skull. This even in a younger one than you have photos of. Jack

According to the guy that found the skull the sagittal crest is wore off. Here is pictures of the jaw and according to the top corner shape where it hook to the skull it suggests European Wolf. I just got the pictures of the jaw. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2023/07/full-964-182858-jaw.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2023/07/full-964-182859-jaw1.jpg) This dawning and picture came from a site talking about telling the difference between a European Wolf and a dog. I will try to post a link to it. https://www.mdpi.com/2813-0545/2/1/...TN4v-VY33uZwwtPQ5s8wtR8cNYKOxAlbm7Bgq7YQ

Mark - Even with the lower mandible, my guess is a domestic. The ramus of the lower mandible is highly variable in domestic dogs, and the "hook" is not definitive. To me, the rounded bottom edge of the found lower mandibles again suggests dog, not wolf. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2023/07/full-10376-182863-wolf_4_2014_005_xx.jpg)

Thanks Jack. I would say one points left and one right. Is there a way to be 100% sure? Not that it matters to me, really. It was about a foot and a half under ground in peat.

white17 I can really say if it is the camera angle or the way it is. You have seen what I have of it. To me it is wide for the length. But maybe the European Wolves are shaped a little different. I do not know. If it is a dog, it wasn't the guy's that dug it up.
