Curious what you consider the best trapping demos you've ever seen at a convention or rendezvous.

The first one I ever went to in the '70's I saw Willis Kent make a #3N disappear into a park lawn. I also got to listen to Keith Gregerson preach snaring. In his younger days he was he l l fire and damnation when preaching how to use, or not use, a snare.

Charlie Dobbins, not because he is kin to this joint but what he had to say

Nothing fancy, no ploy for goods but just plain trapping lingo

Late 70s somewhere at a convention, no clue where it was

I also saw Keith Gregerson in the early 1970's. He was way ahead of his time as far as snaring went. I saw him again at Coyote Days that is put on by John Graham A fedw years ago. I ask him at Coyote Days what was the most bobcat he ever caught in a year and he said he had skinned 250. Those were Montana and Wyoming cats and does not include stole or eagle ate cats. To me he was one of the best snare men to have lived.

Mr Lazarus Sir,

The question you asked brings back many memories,

My answer was the best I can recollect, it wasn't a demo

on a specific animal but how to learn from each animals habits,

Charlie spoke in layman's terms, even the first year trapper could comprehend

I have seen many since that day and gave just a few myself,

Nothing will ever compare to that day....

Ditto, I spoke with Charlie about 2 hours at Cobleskill NY convention many years ago. Everything trapping!

Matt Jones, he's a hoot & a heckuva trapper....Maybe just relate to him better, but his methods helped me the most.

Major Boddicker & Tom Miranda at the '85 FTA Trappers College were great as well.

Matt Jones does good demos. Seen him at a SE Regional.

Also, I like to watch ol' Hal Sullivan.

My first convention last year. It was a UTK meet in the fall. I loved seeing Hal do his demo, but I believe I enjoyed shooting the breeze with him more. The one that probably stuck with me the most was Jerry Pingley doing a coyote demo. The spot he was doing the demo in was the best place to bed a trap, he didn't have any fill dirt with him, but he just kept going. At one point when things weren't going so smooth he said "what would a coyote trapper do" He then proceeded to improvise and get the job done. That phrase has stuck with me on the trapline as well as on the farm, the deer woods, in the factory where I make my living, and sometimes in the grocery store. That moment in time spoke to me personally. Aside from all the trapping knowledge he provided it also had an attitude of "I'm here to do a job, and by golly I'm gonna get it done" Jerry seemed to me do have a strong understanding of coyote behavior and could explain in such a way that a new trapper like me could understand and apply it down the road.

I've been to the Trapper's college and at least 5 different western state conventions. Mostly to seek out canine knowledge. Mark June, Major Boddicker, and Jim Halseth are the ones that stood out to me. I guess because they provided more than a how to demo but presented studies and information that provided good facts as to why they go about with their trapping methods.

I haven't seen a lot on demos but out of the ones I've seen I have to say Mercer Lawing when he did his cat demo at the Ks convention a few years ago was one that has really stuck out to me. I got to visit him a little at his booth too. The man seems to know what makes cats tick. And it is based of experience and watching them on video. I could spend a day talking about cat with him.
