I purchase snares with cam locks and compression springs on two different brands of snares. When I close the snares around my wrist to test them the compression springs just hang there doing nothing. In other words, they don’t tighten or assist the cam locks. What am I missing?

If the snared animal pulls hard enough too compress the spring even a little.
The spring will keep tension on the Lock/Teeth too help keep it from getting loose and backing off.
I prefer the lighter weight mini torq springs on my open country coyote dispatch snares.

If using the compression springs for coyote snaring, go with the 50# spring in open prairie (no entanglement) settings. I've heard people say it doesn't matter which spring you use, the 25# or 50# with a dispatch type set up, but it definitely does in open country. I've learned from experience.

What are that one's that are compressed with a latch that gets knocked loose when the critter hits the end of the leash?

Warrior, Marty Senneker and Lights Out Snaring have a trigger system with oversize torq springs!

When its closed on your wrist, give it a good hard yank, see if it works.

Keep you cable cutters handy.

That is not advisable, boco is always stiring the pot. Did you get them with a trigger or not, Grandpa. Like said, keep cable cutters with you when handling them. I use Sennekers mid length spring, and works extremely well. But give them the respect they deserve!

Pull harder, lol.

Much harder.

All these kill springs are rated for straight line pull. I.e., 50 lbs in a straight line pull.

Incorporating the loop raises the poundage to compress the loop SUBSTANTIALLY. Which is why I prefer 25 lb springs.

I just received my order from lights out. I can’t use them here yet (a CO mentioned that we might be able to use them possibly this year, but it’s in the works) but for the price, figured I check out some pre made wolf snares. Actually pretty slick! Be much easier than hauling power rams around and I like the support and no more giant bite zone to be careful of when I’m doing my final adjustments . Got a few 12” ones that a guy can crimp on more length with some #9 wire.
This one he shipped all made up except there’s no BAW on the lock, just a wire. The pliers are nice for setting the spring.

My testing has proven this to be true for me also.
The 25# spring scored higher then the 50# springs when the results are totaled.
The 50# spring worked pretty good on the big male coyotes. But not the pups and smaller adults.
Testing snare components and grading the results can really help a person fine tune their snare system.
It really helps if You can get set up too build snares yourself, Plus it is Fun!

Yea. That’s I think that’s their down side. The plus for me would be having half dozen in my jacket pocket. The latest update of our Wildlife Act still doesn’t have any changes for kill springs so it’s the Rams for me for the time being.

Many trappers worry about coyotes seeing the lock and spring but, IMO when set up properly, they are up above a coyotes’ line of sight and a from the coyote point of view appear to be just another bit of junk hanging in the bushes.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

The coil is actually the diffuser, power pack will be connected behind a tree or buried in snow…..lol

A simple snare would be great but we can’t use those here under an Open Area License. I believe the registered line guys further north can still use them. I can’t even use these little guys yet, still using the big Ram…..but it works.
