I'm traveling to WY in early September on I 80 to I 90 and want to skirt around Chicago. What is the best route to follow? Thanks

Although it is a slow route due to lots of stoplights, I like to take U.S. 30 along the south side of Chicago. Way less traffic, and you get to see some really tough places like Chicago Heights. Hop back on the Interstate at Joliet.

I 80 should avoid the areas you’re looking to avoid without going through the main ghettos. Then take the bypass near Omaha and come up I 29 North to I 90 or continue on 80 to get to WY.

Will add miles to you trip but if you really want to avoid the crap city altogether I 90 to Cleveland where you take I 71 South to Columbus, where you take I 70 west to Indianapolis, where you pick up I74 west back to I 80 at Rock Island, I80 west to Cheyanne

Last time I went through there on 80, it was around 2am and I sifted right through with very little traffic.

the ferry is shut down , they broke the ramps so that option is out

nearly impossible to avoid ILL

how far do you want to stay out of Chicago?

if just not through Chicago take 80 gas up and pee before you get to Gary and drive

https://sanctuarycounties.com/2021/...t-sanctuary-state-map-update-01june2021/
try and only stop in green counties
seeing as your coming from NY anything green is likely to be as good or better than what your used to.

that said we typically make the run through Chicago and do it in the early morning 02:00-06:00 or on a weekend before 7:30

make sure you have an I-pass or other accepted toll pass.

when my parents go to FL for the winter from SE WI they come over and take I39 south from Beloit although mostly they fly now and leave a car at each place. unless they leave out on a holiday or weekend

mom and dad don't get up well at 0300 and drive, not sure mom ever did

I think mom likes to go hit the quilt shop in Paducah KY any way

the 294 to 90 isn't that bad if your not at traffic hours my wife just took that July 3rd around 16:00 and traffic wasn't bad but it was a sort of holiday

l80 is not bad if you just avoid 7-9 and 4-6 traffic. 90 through windy is only good about midnight to 4 am

Just came back from Fond du Lac Wisconsin last weekend and 80 is all tore up through Indiana and Illinois. Sunday evening and we sat more than drove. I would take 30 or like he said drop down to Columbus and run 70 to 74. If you are ngoing to run 80 better do it late at night or you will be sitting.

God please keep they 19 fallen UBB miners out of trouble up there.

I avoid Illinois completely when I’m traveling across country. I always have a firearm in the vehicle.

but your probably also not heading to NY
NY probably be would be worse for carry than ILL

in ILL you can't have their carry permit but you can CC in your car so long as you don't get out.

if you stick to 2A sanctuary counties in ILL your not likely to have any issues if you keep your gun out of sight and avoid behavior to give probable cause for a search.

Just follow the "thru traffic" signs and none of the cities are bad on major interstates.

Act like the rest of the people, hammer down!

When I drive to visit relatives in Michigan, I leave here at 9 pm and gas up right before I get in St.Louis. That gets me thru St. Louis about 3:30 AM and I can make it thru Illinois with out having to stop. Head up I 59 and get off at Kankakee and head over in Indiana and avoid Chicago all together. I like travelling at night/ early morning through major cities, you don't have to deal with the ferals or construction backups.

Omaha was running a long detour the last couple years for 29 North and yes ignore the detours and full speed ahead for the easiest shortest routes. Was better to put up with a little city traffic then a 40 mile detour that’s avoidable. LOL
