A small one from my garden in early spring about 9 or 10 years ago.

We have them here, sadly, not as many as years past, roads and street drains are hard on them, I move them off the road when I see them, too many sociopaths actually aim for them.

Had a beagle once that wouldn't trail a rabbit, but would run every box turtle it sensed... lol

Michigan has a few Eastern Box Turtles, but they are not in the area I live. We have lots of the Blanding's like Diggerman spoke of. Some folks call those "Box" turtles because they can partially close up their shell in front. I have only found one alive EBT in my entire life, and that was in S.E. Virginia while turkey hunting 30 years ago. The local fellow we hunted with said after a good rain following a dry spell, the darn things were all over the place in numbers. The one my All Purpose Boy and I found I took back to my sisters so my daughter and Bride could see it. Next A.M. we released it exactly where we'd found it. That turtle was totally blind.

Miss way more than I find. Last one I found, was walking through chest high hay and stepped on it because the hay was so thick and tall so was looking at the ground.

I've seen more box turtles this year than I've seen in the last 20.

One of the young post-grads who came to work on the MSU Dioxin Prj in 2000-2001 had just finished a 2-year study on “box” turtles in the Millersburg area. I don’t remember who she was working for but she was working the project alone.

Also, since you previously mentioned the closure of fire lanes, would those be in the area west of Millersburg (what we called the Millersburg Plains) toward M-33?

You're so lucky to have seen one so small.

I found the pictured one as it was walking on the surface, and I found a second live one and a third dead one while digging spots to transplant into in that garden at that time. But the only small ones I've ever seen.

I was at a highly acclaimed nature center around here which had a recently hatched box turtle in a small bowl of water. I spoke to one of the personnel, and suggested that she take that box turtle out of the bowl before it drowns. She was so embarrassed that they had misidentified it, and thanked me for pointing it out. To her credit, and everyone else's, the hatchling box turtle shell is much more flattened than one only twice it's size.

Bearcub, I would have to look at PA rules/regs but I am not sure if we're allowed to possess box turtle shells?? Would have to look into it.

geez, I don't even remember talking about fire lanes!

I was unaware the Millersburg area even had Box Turtles (?)
You suppose she was studying Blanding's Turtles?

Could have been, it’s been 20 years ago and my memory could be a little dim.

Someone from the Rogers City area mentioned the DNR had closed some fire lanes and made them into dedicated walking paths. Thought it was you.

Extremely rare in Minnesota, had one as a kid I found one spring and kept for a couple of years, last one I seen was more then 10 years ago as it crossed the road, in all my life I have probably seen only 7/8 of them all on the eastern side of MN, that last one was near Rush city

I pick up all the empty ones I find. A punch hole with bait in a roadway and covered with the turtle shell catches eyes and curiosity.
