My old f150 is a standard transmission. I always downshift then brake to stop. Getting off the interstate on the off ramp I can go almost to the stop sign without touching the brakes but usually people are right on my bumper… prolly thinking my brake lights don’t work lol. I like the standard in it but when working on a cheeseburger and fries in town it has its downfall.

I try to not use the clutch very often. Just had the original replaced at 264,000 mi.

it depends

emergency stopping like a deer just ran out in front , Brake then clutch

stop sign down shift the clutch goes in in the last 50 yards

it also depends what your gearing is and if your pulling a load

my little truck hates going into first or even 2nd till you are really slow

not that your looking at the tach or that I even have one but clutch goes down when you are sub 1K you just hear /feel it

your getting some slowing by letting off the fuel and letting the engine slow you down , no need to loose that till the rpm would get too low
thinking rear wheel drive here , but rear brakes don't apply till after you get past a point on the pedal , where depends on your master cylinder proportioning valve is set but you want 60-40 to 70-30 front - rear braking

also a valid idea , brake linings cost a less than clutches not so much in parts but in labor

if your matching RPM well then you don't do much to the clutch down shifting some

I will some times push in the clutch toss it in neutral and just roll up to stop signs especially if it is a little up hill to the stop

Another one in the “don’t use the clutch very often”. Usually just pull it into neutral and coast to a stop feathering the brake. I usually just use the clutch for starting off, I run it through the gears without clutching unless I’m in a big hurry.

Are you slowing down from say 70 to 55, or 25 to a stop? It all depends I guess.
