My 11 year old shot an 8 and 5 min.later a doe with his new cva single shot 350 legend. So it's been a busy day for an out of shape 43 year old. All retrieval was foot traffic only. Deer are in coolers and on ice and we are back in the woods now. Guts are allready gone but I can smell them.
I have not seen him so excited on a deer in a while. That was # 12 and 13 for him. "DAD it's a BIG buck. I got him he droped o he moved should shoot him again. O I'm shaking I have not got like that on a deer in a long time"
His shot was down hill through the woods 55 yards from 20' up in a climber. So about 45' above the buck. He was just across a drie creek quartering to. High shoulder shot droped it as expected. 5 mins or so later 30 yards down the creek several deer started crossing. He confirmed one was a doe it hit the opening he bleat by mouth to stop her but was not quite loud enough so I did she stoped he fired . Shot was 87 yards same angle slight quartering away. Took out bottom of both lungs and the sack part at the top/ front of the heart. She stumbled and made it about 17 yards and droped out of our sight but was visible when we walked over. Great blood trail small chuncks of lung and tissue were scattered In an arch blown out from the shot. Small sample size of two deer but I'm very impressed with that rifle and caliber so far. It's very accurate. He used 150gr win xp bullets. I was thinking thay would be light.. did not pass through the buck made it through the liver and into the stomach. I didn't dig around any further to find the bullet. Complete pass through on that smaller doe.
Now to see how well he does if a bigger buck walks out. He is tagged out on bucks for the year in Indiana . Expect tor the refuge hunt we put in for and if we hunt in KY this year. I figure he will shoot several more doe . As will his brother. I figure they should shoot between 6 and 12 between the two of them. Should keep me from needing to shoot any.
Not a bad start to the season so far. Public land .
That's the entry side of the shot on the doe. The exit cam out just behind the off side shoulder hitting the off side leg on the edge.
It's his larges buck and he is thrilled. I'm happy he is happy I rember when antlers were important to me.
