Thought I'd share something I've done to some of my #11 longsprings and 1.5 coils, and that is drilling 2 small holes in the pan about 1/2" apart
I noticed on some old #1 jumps I have there is 2 holes in the pan, wondered why for awhile. I was camping this summer and wanted to put a couple sets out and catch a coon to eat, and the bank of the river I was on was a shallow sloping shale bank, not a good spot for a typical pocket set. I went ahead and caught a crawfish and decided to wire it into the pan, and set the trap just under the water in a small puddle or pool that was in the Middle of this shale bank
The next day I came down to check and sure enough, I have a fat ringtail waiting on me in that #1 jump with 2 holes in the pan. Came home after that camping trip and decided to drill away at a few of my other traps to continue to test this year.
I've been doing some coon removal on an apple orchard with a few ditches and small ponds near me this past week, and have been using this trick, simply wiring a small minnow or crawfish to the pan of the trap. I'm primarily a meat trapper, I don't know if this trick would be useful to somebody looking to put out any kind of a serious line, but i find it nice on shallow sloping banks where I can't get a pocket set in. I'm old school and cash poor so I am not on the dogproof train, and this seems to be a quick, cheap, and effective modification for those shallow pond and stream banks

are raccoons legal year round open season for
trapping during the summer ?

Looks like regular sport trapping season for Raccoon
doesn't open until November 10th, 2023.

maybe a land owner exception like WI , land owners can trap racoon any time they want on their land.

Revolt I'll give that a try this season maybe it will pan out for me.

Often that only applies if the animals are causing damage.

I believe that Ohio has the same law .

Those coons may identify as Southern coons…legal all year long.

The set described at the beginning of this thread reminds me of the old Set that I tried as a Young trapper where you wrapped the pan of the trap with aluminum foil and set in shallow water for raccoon as a curiosity set. I used a no.2 dbls. and had a coon the next day.

That's exactly how I caught my first coon in about 1971, but in a 1 1/2 long spring.

They had crayfish and fish decoys that went on the pans also before my time.

I have one of those clip on metal fish replicas.

On the apple orchard they are indeed causing issues. They sit on the trees eating them apples and the branches break off, broken branches means less apples to sell. Been given permission by the land owner to kill any stinky coon or possum I can get my hands on in any way I can. I have done some work picking apples and plowing fields for him in the past... my camping trip was also on his land

Makes it basically just as fast to drop sets in as a dog proof, and you can do it on any sandbar or muddy farm pond bank that has tracks, just like a dog proof, but you don't have to blow the cash on new fancy traps that can only catch you coon and possum...
I'm going to try some rubber crawfish lures I pulled out my tackle box, could carry a few into a spot with those pre tied on and make it even faster. When you work 50 and 60 hour weeks, being able to quickly put sets out at the end of the day to run on your weekend off is nice

I saw that set in an old book, it's on my list to test this year. Should have more time on my hands to pinch toes with my new schedule and legal trouble resolved. You'll probably see the results of more of my experiments posted here, love testing old school tricks.
Love those #2dbls, far and away my favorite trap for what I get up to. All the ones I got are every bit of 50 years old, still good and strong, nothin gets away. Something to be said about running the woods with a 100 year old double barrel and a pack full of longsprings...

Not picking, I've tried something similar.

Be careful of your exposed, uncovered bait law. It may vary how this set is viewed by different C.O,s.

Good trick set that I have used before but around here that is a heron catching son of a gun.

This is the "gotcha", right here ^. Pretty serious rule.
