Don't wait to the end of season to sell if you can help it.
I talked to a good source a while back( before Schroeder report came out) and he told me that some of the big buyers were starting to balk at the per pound price and that he fully expects the market to take a downturn.
He's a big player in the beaver game and so far everything he's said.like that the beaver castor was gonna drop to 10.00 to 20.00 bucks a.pound, has proven to be true.
A big buyer in wisconsin is really starting to talk about rolling back the price he's gonna be paying for beaver. He thinks the felt markets playing itself out cause prices for the raw pelts are hitting the ceiling...
We're gonna put em up as we go and when we get enough fur done, we're Makin a trip to the buyer.
Jerry also sells marten to the guy so they're gonna get done pretty quick when he gets home.
I'm gonna work on em..They're like fleshing a big rat so I can work on stretching marten and beaver while he's at work.
I saw a fur bug a couple days go so hopefully we'll get a few hard freezes while jerrys gone so they'll be less of em to deal with.
Believe me or not..I just thought I'd pass along the info..I'd hate to see yall get blindsided by falling pelt prices.
Castor is still gonna be in down, least for a while..and it may be there a while if the beaver harvest goes up and all the castor is out there to be sold.
Were holding castor again and well see if prices advance and go from there.
We might be holding again..he's held it before..most he had was 177 lbs at one time.
Back then his NAFA agent got ahold of him and said NAFA wanted to know if he had castor to sell cause no one had been trapping beaver cause the market was down.
We took it to his agent..
NAFA split it between 2 sales cause the didn't wanna flood the market..he got close to 80 bucks for it all in,average.
That's been alot of years ago but I can see it happening again with his buyer.
Anyway I just wanted to give yall a heads up.
I know some will call BS and that's ok. I know what I know and I wouldn't pass on bad info to yall.
We want everyone to make as much money as they can on their fur.
IF IDIOTS GREW ON TREES THIS PLACE WOULD BE AN ORCHARD !

That does not surprise me at all. I figured it was coming last year. That is how the fur market works.

So would you advise catching early fall beaver or wait a bit? I guess catch ‘em and sell em as you catch ‘em like she says.

Word I am hearing is actual grading is going to take place this season.
Some one else mentioned that too. The primes could start paying a little better. Last auction seemed to be mostly size that mattered. Gibb either said it in a video or on line quite a while back before the first auction, stretch em big.

One thing people tend to forget about the hatter market is that to make felt for hats, the beaver have to have underfur. Early beaver dont have much in the way of underfur. Plus demand for whole skins has been increasing and those need to be as close to perfect as you can get.

I wont be selling beaver early because I wont be trapping them early, and all the beaver I had are long gone. I will trap and sell same as always. The market will only determine what goes to the tanner and what goes to the auction.

$50 for beaver here if sold to the local furbuyers, has to be prime though which means through the ice in March and April. Not many folks want to do it, they're missing out on all the fun and a little jingle in their pocket IMO. Beaver meat is also some mighty fine eating............................

Beaver meat is also some mighty fine eating............................ 30+ years ago my lab KNEW she wasn't allowed to eat beaver carcasses but couldn't help herself. One night I cooked some up and tried to eat it. It was horrible. I put the plate o the floor for her and she spit it out.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Typical. When the market gets hot, everybody starts screwing each other and then nobody wants your product anymore.

Well, I guess. I’m hitting areas that I have access to right now and I won’t get to them all. The rest I hit in winter. The ones I miss I’ll get in spring. Price of beaver wouldn’t change that. 2 areas I’m on right now, the owner wanted them cleaned out in August, but I told him the earliest I’d start is Oct 1 when the season opens. He’s not the type that’d go get a kill permit with my name on it. If I trap out of season here, the property owner gets a kill permit with the trappers name on it. I think they’re free but not sure.

Southern trappers will kill theirself all winter and no outlet to sell to until late next spring after they are back down to 3.00. Then we can read all about it on here once again, seems to happen about once every 30 years, lol

I was hoping snare and bite marks wouldn’t be a problem like last year. Snare marks and bite marks shouldnt have been an issue for the last 3 years on beaver unless you shipped to fur harvesters. They supply a different beaver market. If you sold in the country and your beaver were graded you got screwed. I'm sorry to put it that way but it's the truth. None of that matters when the market for beaver is by the pound
