I am looking for some recommendations on coyote snares for my trip to Kansas this winter. I do not have much experience with snaring due to our very restrictive laws in Wisconsin.

3 ft of 5/64 1x19 connected to 4 ft of 3/32 7x&7. Put a decent #6 or #8 in-line swivel between the two types of cable and a regular cable swivel on the end. The lock is your choice. The whammy and staking systems are also your choice. This is what I would use.

If you are snaring in entanglement the swivel is useless. I'm not much of a snare guy, almost never use them, but from my limited experience if you're snaring in the brush the swivel will always be above where the snare is tangled up and therefore doing nothing. Which makes it just something more to try and hide. If you are snaring in the open then a swivel makes good sense.

My preferred and most efficient coyote/wolf snare:
--6 ft of 1X19 5/64 cable with end swivel for attaching +/- 6 ft extension to it.
--using a 3/32 micro lock on 5/64 loaded cable.
--50 lb compression spring
--double 3/32 ferrule for a whammy

The reason for using a 3/32 micro lock on 5/64 cable is the tighter the bite (angle) the tighter the pinch. Another thing to maybe consider is that a slightly larger lock size than cable size will close faster due to less friction than with a matched cable to lock size.

Check what the laws are there in what type you can use. Here I use 5\64 1 x 19 cable and have had good luck with it. My locks are sure locks or the old Thompson locks. I make my own snares so my lengths run fro 4 ft. to 7ft. depending on the terrain.

ok I am in KS and snared my first coyote 51 yrs ago----- I still snare quite a few, especially in summer and late winter---- I keep things very simple, 3/32 cable, penny locks no swivels, no other bling to tempt a refusal. I plan for entanglement and hang a 12 inch snare 10 inches off the ground in flat ground under fences loop about two inches off the ground so wiley can put his paws down to crawl under--- I make my snares and locks-snares are approx 6 ft long and I can use an old used up snare as an extension to let the coyote reach entanglement if needed

I like 5/64th 7x7 in 8 to 10' length so I can anchor high on a small sapling without running and extension,Allan from Montana make some very quick snare's,I like the little deathblow locks.

Yep and that's a ridiculous regulation as coyotes seldom walk with their heads low.14-15 inches above the ground is more common as

coyotes generally walk with their head up and you want them to fire the loop just under their chin to obtain a high neck catch. Furthermore, with a large loop the snare sides will not appear to crowd the animal’s passage.

bctomcat, thanks for the pictures! Looks like you are targeting coyotes and wolves with the same snare?

I agree with you that catching the animal just under the chin is IDEAL!!!

Some trappers are trying to catch Large Fox, Bobcats & Coyotes in the same snares.

When targeting Coyotes I normally set the bottom cable at 12" HT. or a little lower. I do not go any higher because some coyotes might get caught by the mouth?

For a Coyote snare if legal? Try some made with 5/64 7x7 cable, break away device, camlock, kill spring & whammy. Long snares are better.

Anchor your snares too some thing Solid Always!!

Setting specifically for wolves I use a larger loop and set higher. But yes I have caught wolves with my coyote set up. Also with my coyote set up, I may have missed a few but, I have never caught one by the mouth that I can remember.
