I have two in my tuck under garage. When its 20 to 30 below outside it is about 30 above in there. They do fine in the winter but in the hot part of the summer they struggle. They make garage ready freezers that are made to operate at more extreme temps.

I have two chest freezers and a fridge in the shop. Probably gets 140 degrees plus in there in the summer time without the shop doors open.
Been in there for over 5 years and no problem yet, but I do know they struggle in the heat.

I’ve had one in our shed for 10 years, +40 to -40 and still going. Got it off the in-laws so it’s about 20 years old. I just bought a smaller size and put it outside behind the garage just for my carcasses & bait “cupcakes”…..and I guess fur that I get after the last receiving date in spring.

I've had 2 freezers full of food in an unheated basement crap out on me over the years.

My plan is to unplug it once it’s below freezing over winter. But I never did that with my older one.

2 in the garage one is a 1984 upright that belonged to my grandmother the other a family down the street was getting rid of when their kids moved out it had never been inside always a garage freezer I would guess some time in the 90s for that one

My plan is to unplug it once it’s below freezing over winter. But I never did that with my older one. Why would you unplug it? Do you not use it in winter? If it contains food main thing is constant temperature I doubt a taxidermist has more freezers than me !! I have 8 total ! 3 are in unheated uncooled garage! Main thing in extreme heat is making sure coils are clean. The lint build up around side vents will blow your mind During 100 degree temps I run a box fan in front of the vents on the sides . 4 are in climate control building no worries. Last one is on ice cream van. Small fan and doors open kept it at -15 all summer. Of course closed doors at night .

I’m no freezer guy, but if it’s -40 outside of a normal freezer, isn’t it pretty close to the same inside? I don’t mind if the stuff I keep in the outside freezers gets super frozen. Just steaks n stuff that I pull out when the in-laws come down.

I have a Media freezer in my unheated garage. It is made to be used in an unheated area. When I worked, I worked at a place that did printing. All of the machinery put off a lot of heat. The temperature and humidity had to be carefully controlled. Air conditioners ran year round. All of the air conditioners, which were some pretty big units, sat outside. They all had heaters in them to keep the oil, in the compressors, warm. If the oil got cold it would damage the the compressor. When I bought e freezer for my garage I made sure it was rated for cold temperature operation. ^^^ This, older frigs and freezers could take the cold, new ones unless rated for cold outside temps, you will have problems.
