Back when coon actually worth something I prebaited my 220 cubbies. Not sure how many extra coon it produced but always had a ton of possums on opening morning.:)
It's Illegal to pre bait your sets In WI. A dead deer In the woods Is pretty natural. But a pile of fish or something that's not natural to the area may get the wardens attention.
I can only find baiting before season is illegal in the "reg's" on line. Once season is open, baiting is okay? As long as you follow sight exposed bait laws.
If pre baiting isn't worth the time and effort , why bait for deer or wild hogs? When setting for coon , where do you look for sets? At or near their food sources. Corn fields , oak trees , water sources. Set up a bait station near those places , and use corn , not smelly baits or you'll catch skunk and possum . I personally would rather have fewer set locations for coon , than spread out all over the place.

So now the season is open. So your telling me if I want to trap coon say next week, I can't put small containers of cat food out today, in areas to get them there for next week?
Well I figured you were PRE BAITING before the season and that's a no no.
How many skunks and grinners are you going to be feeding when you place these In season baits.
Yes, read it the same way.

Dryland coon: I don't have any idea how small is. I would say it wouldn't last long and when the feed is gone so are the coon. In addition, depending on which county, there are deer baiting regs also ... ask your warren what they consider legal.

If the season is open just set the traps when you put out the bait. Why make extra work out of it?

I think it depends where you hlar honestly and what you have to deal with. Honestly pre baiting is about the only way I can really put up any numbers
Down there, what do you consider a good number?
For ME I'm happy as a clam if I can get 20, I know that's not jack diddly for most but due to the constraints I have to work with it's about as good as it gonna get for now. First two or three minutes of my little video here will explain MY situation
But that being said I know guys who can get on these properties and the like and 250 seem very average if you going half way hard. Lotta guys in Louisiana run feeders too as a time and cost saving measure
Lot easier to catch numbers quick , if pre baiting. Not going to argue that coon are easy to catch. But if they all go to one place , it's easier to get them , and time it for prime fur. Although , any more it doesn't matter as about the only market for coon is the meat market , or ADC if you're doing that , it's more money the longer you drag out the job.
In the archives Wade has a nice thread on prebaiting coon here in SE Nebraska, where is it legal. He went through a TON of corn and bulk feed. Coon have to be worth something to do that, which they were back then. Gang setting on sign is a good way to hammer them without prebaiting.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
Maybe its a population thing. We have a large population here with lots of trails and waterways along with obvious denning and feeding areas. I just set these up and stay for week or so until you've knocked back the population a little and then move on to another line. They are already there using those trails and such so no need to do anything but set them up.
