The mark is based on the same decimal system as the dollar, 100 pfennings to the mark. They didn't do nickel, dime quarter just XX pfenning. The rare one is the one pfenning as they pretty much round up or down prices to the nearest ten pfenning so the one pfenning coin was taken out of circulation. That rarity made it imperative that any new GI in Europe get one ASAP. Because when a pfenning check was called for the guy without one bought the next round, lol. Also german currency was also all coinage exclusively. Their wallets are long wallets with a coin pouch. But that's no more with the euro. The others you got are a French frank, an Italian 500 lira and a British 5 schilling. The British use a weird system not based on 100.

Don't know when the rest switched over to euros but probably about the same time. And if memory serves I don't think the brits ever fully did and since brexit they are off the euro.

I do seem to recall that but in my time there 88-90 it was all coins that I remember.
