I'm sure this hasn't been hashed over ever. Going by the brass I find at the range, the 30-06 is the caliber being sighted in by far. This morning is the opener and it's been a busy place..
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

Around here, I'd say it's 30-30, 30.06 and .303 Brit because all the old timers were buying sporterized Enfield rifles for cheap in the 60s-80s
Just happy to be here.

.308 may not be . But, it is sure the most shot throughout the free world. I used it in the Army, and it served me well. And i figured why change in the civilian world. I would use my .308 on anything but the big bears. Plus, i handload. So, i can tailor my loads accordingly. Only exception was, i used a .300 win mag for goats in Hawaii. Sarge

I've killed three deer with a .375 H&H Mag. I'm shooting a 7mm Mag now. Magnums seem to be popular in this part of the world.

Seems to be a lot of 243's around here. When I was a kid in CO 06 was king. Every gas station had 06 and 22 ammo. Even in the summer.
ScottW, 270 is a fine choice for "out west" deer and elk hunting.

I've never owned a 30 06. Mostly because everyone else has one. There is a good reason to have an 06, a 308, a 30-30 and a 223 .... thats the ammo one could get even during the shortages. Thats the main reason that I keep those calibers represented in my arsenal. Don't get me wrong, if I never bought another pound of powder or primer, I have enough on hand to eat venison for the rest of my days. Its just something to keep in mind

Maybe add the 243 as well for ammo availability.
It's not always about catching fish. That's what people who don't catch fish usually say.
