I'm sure this hasn't been hashed over ever. laugh
Going by the brass I find at the range, the 30-06 is the caliber being sighted in by far. This morning is the opener and it's been a busy place..

Around here, I'd say it's 30-30, 30.06 and .303 Brit because all the old timers were buying sporterized Enfield rifles for cheap in the 60s-80s

Just happy to be here.

30-06 then .308 would be my guess for around here. When I was a kid I’d say 30-30 was most prolific. Happy trapping! ScottW

.308 may not be . But, it is sure the most shot throughout the free world.
I used it in the Army, and it served me well. And i figured why change in the civilian world. I would use my .308 on anything but the big bears. Plus, i handload. So, i can tailor my loads accordingly.
Only exception was, i used a .300 win mag for goats in Hawaii.

I've killed three deer with a .375 H&H Mag. I'm shooting a 7mm Mag now. Magnums seem to be popular in this part of the world.

It makes sense as I look at it as “what if I had one rifle and one rifle only?” Knowing what I know now, I would very likely buy and 06. If I didn’t intend to go out west deer and elk hunting, I’d probably go with a .308 or .270. Happy trapping! ScottW

I'd guess '06, then .308; then .270; then .243; then 7mm-08

Seems to be a lot of 243's around here. When I was a kid in CO 06 was king. Every gas station had 06 and 22 ammo. Even in the summer.

ScottW, 270 is a fine choice for "out west" deer and elk hunting.

I've never owned a 30 06. Mostly because everyone else has one.

There is a good reason to have an 06, a 308, a 30-30 and a 223 .... thats the ammo one could get even during the shortages. Thats the main reason that I keep those calibers represented in my arsenal. Don't get me wrong, if I never bought another pound of powder or primer, I have enough on hand to eat venison for the rest of my days. Its just something to keep in mind

I agree. Maybe add the 243 as well for ammo availability.
