Shot a young buck this mornin at 8:18. Did not drop. Waited bout 10 minutes to walk over and look. Lots of hair and blood. Walked a little farther and found belly contents. Still lots of blood and continued on.

Jumped him and could tell he was sick. Watched him cross a half mile corn field very slow. Pinpointed the last place I seen him. Went home, ate lunch and traded the rifle for my 870. Found blood at the other end of the cornfield. Followed drops for awhile. Took a break and set on a fallen tree. Saw somethin that didnt look right. Found him at 2:30.

Dressed, got home and hosed him out good. Still has a smell about him. Temps in the 30s all day but have never waited 6 hours to retrieve a deer. Just wondering?

He ought to be good. If guts are busted I don’t eat the inner loins. Never found a way to get that gutty smell out

Also consider deer was not dead that whole time, either.

I don't touch anything inside the cavity if a deer is gut shot or stomach gets busted when field dressing(haven't done any of that in years but my brother and dad like to do so apparently). Really aren't losing anything if you do so other than the tenderloins and liver if your so inclined

I agree.
Take off the meat doing the gutless method.

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

I was thinking the same. That deers fine, hard to get the gut stench out once it’s popped. Once you get the hide off he’ll be fine. Most of the cuts are encased anyway and if they’re not just trim them well.

Good luck and good job retrieving your deer

I don't know why people hose off meat? With water it pushes and spreads what you're trying to get rid of. If it's gut shot I prefer to cut that section out. What I'll also do is while gutting I have plugged the hole with paper towel.

I'd make coyote bait out of the inner loin and liver- it might already be tainted.

It'll be fine, I've tracked and found deer that have been dead overnight and they were still good...you might not want to mess around with the ribs and tenderloin is all

yup gets stuck in your nose all day

on road kill with busted guts as most seem to. I sacrifice the tenderloins and everything else can be taken without opening the gut at all

That's what I don't get. Deer was broadside. Yes my shot was off just a bit. Still didn't think this would destroy the gut like it did. Thanks all for the advise. [Linked Image]
